Just making her remember without checking what was even wrong in the first place was a stupid idea and no one Hyoubu planned to entertain. It was more dangerous to him this way, but he could live with that.

He explained as best her could what he was going to do. Even though he suspected she wouldn't be able to understand, he still tried. He didn't make it a habit to invade the minds of others without asking.

"Are you ready?"

She looks at him, a look of confusion on her face, head cocked to one side. She wanted to understand.

But he was right: most of what he said had gone over her head. The only thing that had stood out to her while he had explained and looked so serious was that it seemed important to him, whatever it was, so she didn't even hesitate with her reply, "Yes."

And then she smiled because she believed in him. Believed that no matter what he would keep her safe with an almost childlike conviction.

The look she gave him wasn't new to him. He had seen it on a number of children right here on the Catastrophe. What was it that Magi said? They needed him to be strong for everyone as the leader.

He tried to smile back for her, to reassure her that everything will be fine no matter what he had to do to make it so. It was a bit strained though. He hoped she didn't notice.

He reached out to place his hand on her head, the heel of his palm resting on her forehead.

Psycho Dive.

Oichi noticed, and the smile drops for a brief moment. She isn't really sure why he seems to be sad, and is even less sure over what she can do to help him. She almost wants to open her mouth and tell him not to be sad, wants to hold him tight and pat his head and tell him everything will be okay.

But he reaches out for her before she can reach for him, and she simply settles with closing her eyes and leaning her forehead against his palm.

Without any hesitation he dives into her mind, pushing past the surface towards somewhere deeper within her sub-conscious. The answers he's looking for will be there.

He was careful though, regarding every dark corner with suspicion. He knows her well enough to know that there was plenty to be wary of in Oichi's mind.

Despite its name, Peach Blossom Island didn't only have peach blossoms. There was a lovely field of wild-flowers on the other side of the island. It was perfect for picnicking so that's where they're headed. Huang Rong carried the food, of course. She loved Ichi, really she did, but the poor girl was liable to drop everything.

"We're almost there." She looked back with a bright smile, making sure she was still following.

Oichi is following, although she is some distance away because she had been distracted by the play of the sunlight on leaves and had stood there marvelling at it, gently stretching out her fingers to it and trying to touch it.

She couldn't touch it though, and she gives a soft and obviously disappointed "ah" until she notices the way the leaves cast shadows on her hand and spends a good minute turning it this way and that, distracted.

She shook her head a little with a huff.

"Silly Ichi, are you even paying attention to where we're going?" Huang Rong was pouting, though her voice was warm and fond.

At the mention of her name, Oichi stops long enough to turn and look in Huang Rong's direction before smiling and holding her hand out to her in order to show her how beautiful the sunlight was.

Her face falls though, when the dappled effect from the sunlight disappears because her hand is no longer under the shade of the tree.

Huang Rong blinked, before shifting the basket to the crook of her arm as she walked over. When she could, she reached out and took Oichi's hand firmly in her own.

"Let's go. The fields isn't that far away."

People who have seen Fujiko sleep will tell you that she doesn't sleep like a lady. She sprawls out when she's by herself and when there's someone else she basically wraps herself around them like an octopus.

Which was exactly what she's done to Oichi.

Fujiko turns her head and sleepily mumbles into Oichi's dark hair.

The mumbling wakes Oichi up, and for a moment, she's unsure of what's happening and where she is. She follows the line of the pale throat all the way up to a soft jaw before she remembers.

That's right. Ichi was sleeping.

And with that knowledge, she immediately relaxes and snuggles close. Even Oichi isn't sure why she wants to be close, but some part of her knows without a doubt that maybe, just maybe, if she doesn't let go then Fujiko won't leave her behind.

Fujiko tightens her hold on whoever it was in her bed, before settling down again.

After a few more minutes of peaceful slumber someone started knocking on the door to Fujiko's room. She didn't wake up at first though. She just scrunched up her face and pulled the blanket over both their heads.

Oichi doesn't even hear the knocking (even when it starts getting louder) because as far as she was concerned, knocking wasn't her problem.

And it was warm under the blankets.

Unfortunately, even if Fujiko slept like a brick the constant and persistent knocking eventually made it difficult for her to keep sleeping peacefully.

She sat up slowly, the blanket sliding off them both to pull at her waist. She glared groggily at the door.

"Oh, honestly... unless the world is ending, go away!"

There was no real light in the Realm of Darkness. There was something like it, a shadow, a mockery of true light which allowed them to see, but it had no warmth and Aqua could clearly feel the difference even if she can't really verbalize it.

The light in this place reminded Aqua a little of her current companion. In Oichi's heart, Aqua could see the echoes of a light, like the brief embers left after a candle's flame had been snuffed out. It was, however, shrouded by a darkness that Aqua was afraid would one day consume Oichi.

She refused to let that happen.

She stopped at a clearing that looked safe for now and turned to Oichi whose hand Aqua made to sure hold pretty much at all times. "We can rest here for a while."

Oichi sways for a moment, unsure, before she sinks to the floor and looks up at the blue-haired girl as if asking for confirmation that what she's doing is okay.

She didn't remember how long she had been wandering, nor did she remember how exactly she had gotten here. Every time she tried to remember, her head hurt and after a while with she had simply stopped thinking, contenting herself with going wherever her feet could take her. Monsters attacked, of course, and occasionally when she couldn't get away, she would black out and wake up safe but with no memories of what she had done. It was at one such incident that she'd met the pretty blue-haired girl.

Instead of answering verbally, Aqua sits down beside her with a smile. "We've been walking a lot. You must be tired, right?"

Aqua remembered the day she'd found this woman. She'd gone because she saw the silhouette of a couple of giant Heartless who were crowded around something. By the time she got there the Heartless had been destroyed leaving behind the woman who called herself 'Ichi' and Aqua had dragged her along ever since.

"No...Ichi...can still keep going...."

And she moves to stand up.

"No. It's all right if we rest for a while." She held onto Oichi's arm. "There's no telling when we'll be able to do this again, so we should take advantage of it when we can."

It was because she was sure even if Oichi was tired she wouldn't say anything that Aqua wanted to do this. Because while she knew the limits of her own body very well, she didn't know her current companion's that well.

"It's fine, Ichi."

let's throw some au idea out here and see if they stick

It is no wonder that someone like him would birth legends in his wake; words of exotic marvel and fascination spread faster than wildfire. A white-haired youth with mismatched eyes that burned with the ferocity of a wild animal--obviously a foreigner, but not from the Dutch trading ports, and whoever had been brave enough to approach him and ask where he had come from would only be met with the same stony expression he had when they approached.

It was also a matter of time until the foreign wanderer had found himself on Oichi's land, wordlessly trading local money for a hot dinner. Even with the suspicious, confused stares that were cast his way, he still eats peacefully, and afterword, he takes out a book and writes. Between paragraphs, his eyes drift to the windows as his mind is deep in thought. That is when he catches sight of the delicately-featured woman, with long, ink-black hair, and he can't help but watch as she moved, with a slightly somber face that no one else in Japan would have seen yet.

Oichi had heard of the youth with the white hair. Mostly in passing from her vassals, who often rambled on around her, looking at each other uncomfortably while she smiled at something no one else could see.

Driven mad, they had said. A fire, with her as the sole survivor but with her memory completely wiped clean. They had supplied her with their own stories of her only family: a brother, the very best of brothers, a conqueror who owned these lands. They had told her she would have to live up to his name. For their sakes.

She hadn't understood.

For the most part, they explained her behaviour as eccentricity, mourning, covering up her strange and uncharacteristically childish demeanour whenever they could. It was not like anyone was interested in arguing: her brother had been a conqueror, cold and cruel. And the sister, even before her madness and lack of memories, was more than capable of a detached, casual brand of cruelty when others needed it of her.

That was why, nobody even thought to question her as she circled the pine tree for the umpteenth time, counting and recounting the cracks in the bark as she traced them with her fingers.

As he watches her, he comes to realize why she had caught his eye in the first place. He turns from the window to pack his things away in his cloth bag, bows his head in thanks for the meal, then takes his leave.

He greets Oichi by hardly a standard means. Noticing her fixation of the cracks in the pine tree's bark, he plants a hand--tightly wound in white cotton bandages stained with the red of his blood--in the path of Oichi's incessant counting. He seeks to break her concentration, to capture the vacancy of her spirit with the burning ferocity of his own.

He does succeed in stopping her from circling because she wouldn't duck under his arm while it was in her way. Instead, she tilts her head to regard the hand that seems to her to almost have just sprouted from the tree before she lets her fingers trail up the bark and over the bandage. It said a lot about her, that her mind mostly glossed over the blood as her eyes followed the hand planted in front of her all the way up to a stranger with a pair of mismatched eyes, staring into her own mild black ones.

Tree now long forgotten, her hand comes up to brush against his cheek. Not to see if he was real, of course. Her mind had long since stopped bothering about the distinction between what was real and what wasn't. She only wanted to touch him.
