In the end, Chang Geng made sure to take care of all his affairs before he left. His lands he had passed on to another who had good ideas for how to help the area continue to grow. Any projects he had started he either finished or made sure there was someone to take over it. He even helped Anya exchange all her peanut money (plus some extra from his own pocket) for some gold accessories she could bring back with her.

He came to Avalon with nothing besides the clothes on his back and he had intended to leave the same way.

Except for the little house they lived in.

If asked, he could give many reasons for why he didn't give the house away. In case of an emergency they could come back. It was a small place, it was hurting no one if he kept it in his own name.

But the truth was he was just being selfish. He didn't want to give up this place that was tied up with so many memories of people he cared about.

The pixies in the yard were happy enough to keep it clean in exchange for silk ribbons and other small, shiny baubles he brought back from Great Liang whenever he came back to visit.

Sometimes, he meets others he met in Avalon here.

Today seemed to be that sort of day as he pushes the door open and sees Walter.

The smile comes to his face easily. "Good morning."

This whole thing started because Hyobu had gone and gotten himself locked in a tower of all things.

So really, Kaoru reasoned, it was really Hyobu's fault that they were in this mess.

She's a small fairy in this weird fairytale set up, just large enough to perch comfortably on Andy's shoulder or on his head (or just hover over it. She can fly, after all.) She was currently floating over Andy's shoulder, her small hands patting him.

In front of them, there was a large, sleeping chimera. It was blocking the entire path...that they cannot walk around because they were taking a narrow path that is made out of outcroppings sticking out from the mountain side.

Oops?

"...that wasn't there last time." Is her defense. Then she adds thoughtfully. "Maybe you can climb over it?" And it's definitely 'you'. Because Andy, you are the only one here who doesn't have wings.

At some point, Chang Geng knew he'd have to settle down somewhere. That he can't just...keep living like a drifter now that he's responsible for a child. The question was where and how to do it safely.

He'd happened on this city by chance. There were quite a few good schools in the area, the area (after a little reconnaissance) seemed welcoming to a single father raising a daughter. It was quiet, but not too much so which was better for Anya. There were other families with children as well.

And then, it just so happened that a small place with a yard was on sale for a reasonable price.

They moved in not long after he closed the deal. He let her choose how to decorate her own room (her first after a year of rented places and hotel stays.

That Gu Yun lived within driving distance wasn't something he had planned for. But once he did...once he did he couldn't help the way his heart skipped a beat. It's been four years since they'd seen each other, after all. But he was still a little unsure.

So, he as he finished brushing Anya's hair he asked,] How about we go to the park again?

[Again because they'd gone two other days already, at around the same time, in hopes of running into Gu Yun.]

The Phantom Thief Meme

CHOOSE YOUR ROLE:
I. The Detective: Is this nepotism or am I a genius?
You are the law. Or at least a very well paid security guard and your life would have been comfortable and cushy if someone didn't keep throwing calling cards at you to announce their intent to commit burglary.

Now why do you keep having the strangest sense of deja-vu when the friendly neighbourhood florist waves at you…

II. The Phantom Thief: Here one second and gone the next, like a divine wind
By day you're nothing more than a harmless civilian going about your life. Maybe you're a student who seems oddly good at parkour. Or a flower shop owner with the uncanny ability to pull flowers out from behind people's ears.

By night though you're the feared and admired Phantom Thief™. You are the darkness, always happy to empty the pockets of the corrupt to fill those of the poor. Or your own, no one's judging you. Probably because they still haven't managed to catch you.

III. Wildcard
It takes many roles to support a Phantom Thief™, would you rather be a best friend? A maker of gadgets? The totally not-at-all suspicious nun who just happens to bump into marks and pass on the info to your favourite Phantom Thief? Have at it and live your dreams!

OPTIONAL SCENARIOS
I. The Big Heist: Aw, it's a priceless diamond…. Thanks….
You spent all day getting people into place and you know for a fact that no one should be able to get in without your permission.

Except the statue is now a single rose and in the pandemonium you definitely saw the silhouette of someone very familiar.

II. The Big Chase: Parkour!
Anyone can theoretically get away with a crime if they have enough streamers and confetti. But those rooftops are high up and one wrong step could mean disaster either in the form of the detective catching you or you having to catch the overzealous detective. I mean, you can't let them die. You're a thief, not a murderer.

III. The Big Nothing to See Here: Just civilians being civil
One of you is definitely not who you say you are, but there is normal person stuff to do in the most normal way possible. Don't let your secret identity slip!

IV. The Big Reveal
You knew this day would come, the day when you finally admitted to who you truly are. Yes, I am the Phantom- Wait, what do you mean you knew?!
Or conversely: what do you mean you're the Phantom Thief? I nearly fell off a building trying to catch you!

Chang Geng didn't think there was a way he could forget her. She had been the first to treat him with any kindness in the Forbidden City and, in turn, she had become the first and only person he loved. He would have moved mountains for her. If she asked, he would have given her whatever she wanted.

But she never asked. And yet...he knew what she wanted, what she needed.

That was why when the Emperor died and he'd been crowned, he hadn't told her about his feelings. He'd tucked it away in his heart, smiling at her not as the child she'd known who wore his heart on his sleeve and would rather spend his time with a good book instead of attending any celebrations. Prone to stubbornness and occasional tempers when pushed too far.

Instead, he stood in front of her as a young man about to take the throne, the Yan Wang turned Emperor who was mild-mannered and gentle, unflappable and unreadable.

He told her, she could go free. He could fake her death and he'd give her money. He bought her some land with his own money (off the records. No one could trace it) and she could do with it what she wished. He wanted her to be free.

And she had left and he had let her leave and, apart from having Cao Chunhua keep track of her occasionally, just to ensure she was doing well, he let her have her freedom.

The throne was not secure and so he consolidated power. For her to live freely and comfortably, the country had to be running smoothly. Wars could not be permitted.

(And if all the other consorts who had tried to hurt her had all died under mysterious circumstances, well. He had better things to worry about than what happened to the previous emperor's wives.)

Six years later, he put his youngest brother (whom he had helped raise and educate) onto the throne when the situation was settled and headed out. He had specifically asked Cao Chunhua not to tell him where she was. Only that she was safe. He had promised, after all, to let her be free.

So, as he headed towards the house he'd given her, the property secluded in nature but also within walking distance of a nearby town, quiet for when she needed it and company when she wanted it, he had no idea if she were there or not. He stopped at the fork in the road and stayed there, letting his horse graze. He held the reigns in a light grip thinking, if she doesn't show up today then he will return tomorrow.

Again and again, until he knows for sure she isn't here. Then he will...go somewhere else then.

He had promised her freedom, had loved her enough to let her have it, but he was also a selfish creature. He wanted to see her again, wanted to be by her side even if she may never return his feelings.

All he wanted was to be able to see her smile.

Chu Wanning had always been the sort of person to be proactive. If there's a problem, she'll solve it. If it's a problem she can resolve using cultivation then there's nothing more straightforward. Whether she needs to invent a new spell, create a new magic tool, a mecha or even just to fight something...she could do all that.

But this was...this wasn't a problem he has ever experienced!

Forget being flirted with and complimented! People didn't even want to talk to each other when she's in the room! And she's as likely to be stared at in discomfort-bordering-on-fear and even those who work up the never to speak to her would sooner call her Grandmaster Chu than anything even remotely similar to a lady. Even the Sect Master only ever called her Yuheng!

So she's at a lost as to what to do about all this--this--!

When there's not a lot of...all this going on, she could maybe admit to herself that they were sort of...maybe...something like friends, even if she's often exasperated with how terrible Tristan seems to be at taking care of himself. But being complimented made her embarrassed and when she's embarrassed she's quick to move on to being mad and there's only so many times she can turn her head (with a blush no less) and tell him he's being ridiculous or shameless before she realizes it's not working.

So she suddenly glares after sputtering and failing to find something that appropriately conveys her embarrassed-anger to say.

She's not a particularly tall woman, her silhouette more willowy and lithe rather than anything more intimidating, but Tianwen is in her hand in a flash and she snaps with all the experience she has with disciplining unruly disciples (or, well. Just one unruly disciple, mostly),

"Kneel down!"

[Naturally, when given the chance to accompany the Sect Master to another country, to see new creatures and get to come into contact with new spells, and new...well. Everything, of course Chu Wanning would go.

They hadn't even come here to fight anything, really, but...how could either of them do anything when danger comes? The Sect Master stayed behind in the village, behind the safety of a barrier Chu Wanning put up, golden in colour with patterns of flowers swirling on its surface.

He had some concerns, maybe, that what they were up against would require special means to defeat, but in the end, just beating them up with his whip, TianWen was enough. Even if his build leaned more towards lithe he'd been fighting his entire life and, besides that, he was in possession of a tremendous amount of spiritual power. He wasn't any kind of pushover.

The golden glow of his spiritual energy faded from the whip...which looked like a willow branch and clearly felt magical, as the rest of the creatures ran. But he doesn't dismiss the weapon.

In fact, he doesn't drop his guard at all.

He can sense something else (someone else?) and not.]

[He reminds himself that this was just an outing with a friend. Surely, despite what he himself feels, Shen Qingqiu only sees him as such. He shouldn't push it, shouldn't ask for too much.

This was an outing between friends. An outing between friends!

Now, if only the tips of his ear would stop turning red every time Shen Qingqiu so much as looked his way he'd be thankful.

They were just taking a pleasant walk! What was there to blush about!? So what if they were holding hands and had been for a while now? Isn't that just their normal?]

While Mahmut would always love the Turkieye Stratocracy best--and would never be quite at home in Centro and all the water surrounding it--Venedik was a beautiful place.

After the war, it was important to maintain diplomatic relations and as both Minister of Foreign Affairs and the person Venedik had entrusted Abiriga to, it was natural that negotiating with the Queen of Centro would fall on Mahmut's shoulders.

The negotiations had concluded by this point, all that was left was to sign the treaty and trade agreements then Mahmut could go home.

But that was for tomorrow. For tonight, there was a lavish party he was required to attend and, unlike when he was a new soldier, fresh from military academy, he was not allowed to simply sit in a corner and feed Iskender while ignoring everything and everyone else. It wasn't his preference but he'd learned how to deal with it.

After tomorrow, he'd be free to return to Turkieye and for that he was grateful.

And maybe the reason for that was the fact that he couldn't easily receive news from the kulaks in Venedik. After all their spy network didn't extend to here. It didn't make him uneasy, but without being able to stay in contact with the network means that if she showed up in Old Tugrhil Village he wouldn't be able to know until he left Venedik or until someone could get a messenger to him via ship.

It was too long a delay...though it may be strange to think of it that way. After all, he hadn't heard from her since they parted. Should he really be holding out hope she may return still?

Eventually he excused himself and headed to a balcony for some fresh air.

Waking up in another world was weird enough on its own even without the whole By The Way Some of You Turn Into Items bit. Witches? Death Gods? Humans who become monsters from consuming souls of innocents? It was almost too much for Mahmut to wrap his mind around.

So his first day here he'd sat down and focused on the fundamentals. There was a war. In order to return home the war had to end. That he could do. Mahmut was a soldier and a general, though he had wanted peace he knew his way around a battle.

But even such a familiar thing was full of unfamiliar components. Partners? Meisters? Weapons? It had taken him a while but he's finally getting the hang of things (and even found a partner though he wonders at times whether they really were the best fit for each other).

He sighed as he walked back to his apartment (one of the paid ones because resources were not to be wasted lightly so Mahmut had made it his personal mission to find a job and move out of the free lodgings he was provided with).

He unlocked his front door and pushed it open, expecting there to be no one inside.

Governing Chielo was fairly straightforward. They'd already completed work on the first imaret and Zeki Pasha, for all his arguments against keeping the poor district was working without minimal grumbling about the handicaps they'd given him (but there was still some, because what they were asking of him wasn't the most efficient plan, but it was important, never-the-less).

He was kept busy enough, trying to keep everything running, not only well, but better than that because Chielo had suffered trauma, had been divided and they had to put in double the effort to make it better.

Honestly, he barely had any time for himself lately.

But even if he did, that time from a few years ago when he was in Cinili and the memory of his first (embarrassing) love would have been the last thing on his list of things to think about. That was over and done with, a story ended that had not been meant to be. It was nothing more than a footnote of his youth (was it arrogant to think himself so much wiser than he was only a handful of years ago?).

He was walking the streets of Chielo today with Cassandra, because it was important to be seen, to speak to the people here (to let them know they weren't invaders but here to help). He was talking to a merchant about sales (and how to properly calculate cost) while in his head he was juggling ideas about what to do about the currently understaffed hospital.

Just another day in the life of the Steward of the Turkieye Stratocracy's first foreign territory.

Or so he thought.

Kaoru was rubbing her eyes as she made her way out of her room, yawning widely. She was off to get some water, and was going to head straight back to sleep...except she thought she heard something.

She frowed, still mostly asleep as she made her way to where it was. Dimly, she was aware that there was only one person who'd be awake this early.

...unless it was a burglar.

Fujiko wasn't supposed to be out in the city.

Her father had reminded her (on multiple occasions) that as a noble's daughter, especially one who'd already turned eighteen and is now an adult, she wasn't supposed to be going out to the marketplace without an escort.

And every single time Fujiko had basically told him that she'd do what she wanted and don't you dare tell me how to live my life.

So she was walking through the marketplace as an act of direct disobedience. She's going to enjoy it too! Because no one tells her what to do.

As she stops though when she hears a scuffle coming from one of the alleys. What's going on now?
