He had stepped outside to the front porch because he was feeling better that morning, and it looked like it was going to be a nice day based on what he saw just beyond the shoji doors of his room. After sitting out on the paneled floor, watching the sunlight dance over the trees and wash over everything, after enjoying the breeze for a good thirty minutes, he felt the whimsical need to reward himself for his decision. Hence the pipe.

Takasugi took a long drag and let it out in an appreciative huff. He leaned back against the wall of the house, watching nothing in particular. The road leading to the place that he now called his home was customarily empty, but the low buzz of human occupation reached his ears from a far distance.

That was good enough. He felt, at least, the could not really be a part of any of that. Not yet anyway. As things were, he had barely managed to recover from his own horrendous injuries, and had only started to really acclimatize himself to living in this world that was, in many ways, like his second home.

He could never go back. Slowly, he was coming to terms with it.

Her room (and this whole house) was unlike anything she was used to. She knew though, that it was familiar to him and she was glad she was able to give him this small piece of the home he can never go back to.

She knew, after all, how hard it was to let go. Even when she knew there was nothing waiting for her except more than a decade of Darkness waiting for her back home the decision to stay hadn't come easily. Aqua had given up on more than just the promise she made to her friends. She gave up her dreams and everything from her life before by staying.

Some days she still can't help but think that her decision would have disappointed Master Eraqus if he had known.

In the end though, she could never bring herself to regret it. As much as she wanted to hold onto everything important to her, it just wasn't possible. Her friends would be saved: Sora would see to it that they were. There was someone else who needed her more than they did.

She stepped outside when she didn't find him in his room. There were really only so many places to look. She stepped outside, still in the tank top and shorts she slept in.

"Good morning." The smile that accompanied the greeting was still sleepy. It usually took her a while to wake up fully.

Takasugi heard Aqua's approach long before she actually turned up, and was thus watching her come around with a peculiar little smile on his face. It was, in a way, a small victory that he was smiling at all.

"Good morning." A pause, and then: "Care to join me?"

Here was one person who still believed in him, and happened to still be around. Here was the one person who had, in one too many ways, saved his life. Here was the one person that he felt safe with at the moment, and - while things remained complicated and more than just a little bittersweet - the one person whom he could trust.

She let out a quiet hum instead of an actual reply, but the fact that she went over and sat down beside him should be answer enough.

Aqua still felt that smoking was a terrible habit. At the same time though, she's come to associate the smell with him. Some part of her will probably miss it if he ever quit.

"You're up early today." Is everything all right? was the question she didn't ask.

Takasugi, in turn, switched hands, moving his pipe further away from Aqua's general vicinity. It was the least he could do. He knew how she wasn't too hot on some of his vices.

"It's a nice day today."

I'm fine.

That was the answer that he did not bother saying out loud. It was also the truth: that much was obvious in the way he was speaking, and how he looked.

In the beginning there would be times when she didn't know how to act around him. He was still Takasugi, but at the same time he wasn't. A lot of things had changed yet, in spite of that, His presence was still something she took comfort it.

She observed him carefully for a moment, trying to take in everything to discern whether he was all right or not. Apparently satisfied with the answer she found, she let out a quite breath and leaned against him.

"It is, isn't it?"

On Takasugi's end, he used to shy away from her touch, and - at times - her very presence. A part of him still believed that he did not deserve any of this, and that this second chance was something he would not be able to do anything with. When he saw how it hurt her, however, he started to apply himself even more towards learning how to believe in himself again. It was the least he could do. After all, would Aqua love someone who wasn't worth it?

He took another drag from his pipe, and used his free hand to brush the bangs away from her face.

"Mm-hm." A pause, and then: "Do we have anything to do today?"

Were there errands to run, or missions to do? Granted, he was perfectly content with doing absolutely nothing beyond be with her.

It was never a question of whether or not he was worth it. All that mastered was that he was important to her. That alone was reason enough to stay and to believe. To Aqua, love was reason enough.

She knew though, what it had taken to get them to this point. Things were not perfect, but this moment of peace was hard won and that made it all the more precious.

Aqua smiled contentedly when she felt his fingers brush against her forehead.

"Our next mission won't be for a couple more days." Things were not as bad now after the war but there were still kishin eggs that needed to be disposed of. "I need to go out to buy groceries later today, though."

"Do you want me to come with you?"

It was an honest question simply because Takasugi actually asked. He did not really go out of the house these days unless there was a good reason to, but if Aqua was going somewhere...

Shevhadn't expected him to ask. All the same she thinks it would be good for him to get out more.

"If you want." She tills her head up to smile at him. "I could use the company. "

"Then I'll go."

He returned the gesture freely; another big step on his part. Their current setup, it seemed, appeared to be working rather well. He had, over the past month or so, started opening up and smiling more.

"Maybe we can even eat out."

She had missed his smiles and seeing it now, as it always had, gave her a warm feeling. It was a bit like relief, but mostly she was just so very glad. It was in moments like these when she knew, without a doubt that things will work out for them.

"I'd like that. Is there anywhere in particular you wanted to go? "

"Not really. It's just a nice day... might as well spend it outside, right?"

Anywhere was good enough for him, especially if it meant being out with Aqua. They could always find something to do.

"We could bring a lunch and have a picnic at the park." There were a few places Aqua could think of going to but, given the weather today, this was much more attractive. They could always pick a quieter area of the park to do this.

Though, like him, the company was much more important than the location to her.
