But even whatever it is in the darkest corners is hesitating as Hyoubu gets closer. It wants to keep those secrets safe, holding in the blood and the fire (no no NO) and the death and the pain of losing him, losing everything and knowing without a doubt that it had to be her fault. It was always her fault.

It wants to reach out and crush Hyoubu, stop him from getting further. Tendrils reach out for him, hundreds of them even as voices whisper, It'll be okay. Ichi can take care of him even if we break his mind to pieces.

Fighting in someone else's mind was that you never had the home-turf advantage. It was even worse when you were in the mind of a highly volatile, high level esper.

Teleportation was no good. Not when an attack can come from any direction and there was that brief pause when he finished teleporting that would leave him open to attack. Instead, he repelled the tendrils with his psychokinesis, blocking them and cutting them off when he could. He didn't back off, though. He pushed forward slowly, even if it meant bringing himself closer to the darkest part of her mind.

Whatever her mind was trying to protect had to be what he was looking for.

"Sorry." He gritted his teeth and grinned, sharp and dark ans he swept his arm out to cut another tendril reaching for him with his powers, "I'm not really interested in playing right now."

Fuck. These things were persistent...

There's a hysterical bubble of laughter from within the tendrils as the ones nearest Hyoubu start shifting to take the form of hands with sharp nails.

All my fault. It's all my fault.

And then the laughing fills the air, laughing and laughing as if it could somehow stave off the tears.

I can't help it because you're beautiful when you smile.

N...g...m...sa

D-Don't look at me like that, you idiot Ichi.

Naga-

A dark hand wraps itself around Hyoubu's leg and yanks.

The words and voices distract him for a moment...and it was a moment he couldn't have afforded to be distracted in.

"Shit!"

He's dragged back (towards where, he couldn't really be sure), he turns to try to cut it with his powers again, but more came to take its place, some even latching onto his arms. Teleporting was completely out of the question now. The space around him was shifting too much and too quickly for him to get a good handle on where to teleport to.

Damn it, damn it, damn it!

The hands were determined to smother him out, drag him somewhere and never let him see the light of day, protect him, keep him safe, never let him go.

Some of them seemed hesitant, because Oichi herself was hesitant. Even beneath the madness and the fear that it was her fault again, she could remember hands holding hers. Not the wispy, barely-there dark ones that her mind conjured up to comfort her loneliness. Not the clammy ones that held onto her tight even as life bled out of the body bit by bit.

Warm ones.

Warm hands that made hers seem small in comparison. Hands that were attached to a gentle person who had looked at her as if she were important not because of what she could do. A gentle person with warm hands, warm skin, warm neck and warm arms.

A hand detaches itself from the ones holding Hyoubu down, and its fingers lengthen to an almost impossibly long, sharp point.

DON'T!

At that word, all the hands pinning Hyoubu melt into smoke and disappear. The one poised above him stays longest, swaying as if looking for confirmation before it too melts away. And all around, with the area near Hyoubu as the epicenter, red flowers that glow softly in the darkness begin to grow.

He could burn away those shadows. But dare he risk damaging her mind further?

Before he could make a decision though, he heard her voice and the shadows dispersed. He didn't relax though until all of the shadows dispersed. When that happened, he knelt down and let his fingers brush one of the flowers.

"The flower of death and separation...these flowers don't suit you at all." He straightened, placing his hands in his pockets and headed even deeper into her mind.

And the flower he had brushed burned a clear, pure white for a moment until it winked out in the darkness he had left behind.

The flowers seem to follow his footsteps though, growing sometimes as if to herd him in a direction, and sometimes disappearing entirely and leaving him alone in the darkness.

As he gets deeper though, there is the sound of someone crying.

Once he heard the crying he no longer need the flowers as his guide. Sound worked a little differently in a place like this, but his psychometry was a high enough level that he could tell where it was coming from.

Eventually he landed where the source of the crying was, in the deepest part of her psyche.

Most people would have expected something scary. Even Oichi herself, if she had been lucid enough would have expected there to be fire (always there would be fire) or a burning bright light so different from the comforting darkness that she preferred, so deep in her mind.

But there was nothing like that.

There is only the slightest give in the darkness until it breaks away into a warm, soothing light cast by scores of white flowers with buttery yellow centres. In the middle of it all, is Oichi who sits staring out at the flowers as she tries to hold in the sobbing and to stay as still as she can so not even the slightest movement can disturb the perfection of the plants around her.

He pushed at the darkness with one hand and was almost surprised when it gave so easily, after all the trouble he went to get to this point. The world behind it was beautiful and bright and while Oichi might not have expected something like this Hyoubu couldn't say he was surprised. This scenery was much more fitting he thinks. The expression on her face though, that shouldn't be here. He didn't walk over, instead he picked himself up and flew over to where she was, trying not to disturb the flowers. He landed in front of her, crouching down so they were almost eye-level.

He reached out to place a hand on her head. "I finally found you."

Oichi didn't expect anyone here. She couldn't remember how long she had been sitting here, haunted by the reminder of how precious their time had been and how she had ruined all of it.

It was all her fault.

She couldn't remember, because it was painful and so sweet, her only treasure in a time full of darkness when all she could do was to hate herself and hate the people around her. She had missed him then. She had missed him so much that she saw him everywhere, always trying to say something to her.

She didn't want to remember, because she didn't deserve it. She didn't deserve it when she had taken his memory and twisted it into something horrible in order to make an excuse. In order to make it seem that it wasn't her fault. She was doing it for him...

That's why when she feels a hand on her head, she freezes, certain that he was coming, finally, to blame her for all that had happened.

He saw her freeze and it brought a sad edge to his smile.

Something like a happy ending was something he could never have. There was no happily ever after for a person like him. It had been impossible since the day his Commander put a bullet through his head. That was why he wanted to give the espers under his protection a different future. He wanted them to be able to walk in the light and smile and laugh and live.

The hand moved from the top of her head to cup her cheek, stroking her cheek with his thumb. "I'm not here to hurt you."

When she hears that, she looks at him. Really looks at him and the tears she has been holding back start falling because she has to explain to him while he could still hear her (because she knew better than anyone that there was such a thing as being much too late). She had to explain, but even though there are so many things that she wants to say, all she can manage when she puts her hand over his and cries is, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

Hyoubu wonders how long she's been like is. How long has she been here, crying deep in her heart without anyone to hold her.

He wasn't the person she wanted to apologize to, and he couldn't become that person except in the most superficial way. Hypno didn't give him the memories to pull off something like that.

What he can do though, is draw her close and hold her until her tears subside. Which is what he does now before letting his hand rest on e back of her head as he does so.

"it's okay. You don't have to be alone anymore."

She allows herself to be drawn close, holding tightly to the front of his clothing, "I'm sorry, and..."

Then with a deep breath, she looks up at him, "...thank you....for taking care of her. For taking care of us."

"Out of everyone, I'm the last person you need to apologize to or thank." He smiled at her gently. "From the moment you came aboard the Catastrophe, you became an irreplaceable part of our family and lives. It's natural for us to take care of you." Not just him, but everybody on the Catastrophe wanted to help her.

She shakes her head, putting her hands on either side of his face, "No...because you found me. Ever since his death...you're the first person that has found me. And even if we aren't strong enough to remember...I know that you will continue to be here, taking care of us."

She smiles at him then, a heartbroken, gentle smile, "Besides, you...are precious to her."

He doesn't shy away from her touch though he doesn't make a move to return the gesture or to put his hands on her.

If only he had found her sooner. If only he could have eased her suffering just a little earlier.

But he was here now, that was what really mattered.

"Do you want to remember? Don't worry about whether or not you are strong enough to. You can leave that problem to me." What mattered was whether or not she wanted to. Even if remembering meant that she would never look at him the same way. All he wanted was for her to find peace.

When he doesn't return the gesture, her smile drops and she pulls her hands away.

That was the problem, really, wasn't it? If she remembered...she's sure she could never be 'Ichi' again. He would keep his distance, mindful of the fact that he wasn't Nagamasa. And with the knowledge that Nagamasa was dead...she would have to live having lost both of them. She wonders if it's selfish now, like the choice she had made that time. Would it also end with him leaving her behind just like Nagamasa had?

She clenches her hands in her lap, and is looking down when she catches sight of one of the white flowers.

The heavy blossom nods, just once as if the wind had passed over the flower field and she knows the choice she will make. Just like she had known when she had decided to stay last time. And she wouldn't regret it, no matter what. If it was just something like that, she was sure even the weak, selfish her could manage it.

"I...don't want to."

He didn't say anything, didn't push her for an answer. This was an important decision, one she had to make for herself.

Hyoubu won't rush her into making a decision she will regret.

"All right." His reply comes after a short pause. The choice she made would make stabilizing Ichi's psychic centre more difficult. Her lack of control, from what he could discern came from the split in her consciousness. He had hoped by uniting them he could at least give her a more normal life. One where she wasn't constantly in danger of losing control.

However he had said, hadn't he? Whatever she chose, he would make it happen. Whether she was Oichi or Ichi didn't matter. Whether she was in love with him or someone else didn't matter. He had already resolved to help her when he decided to come here.

She smiles at his reply. It isn't like Ichi's smile, which when it ever appears on her face, is bright and innocent as if nothing in this world could ever hurt her again. This is a smile that knows it's caused trouble for other people yet again, apologetic and yet so so hopeful that maybe everything could turn out right this time for at least one of her.

"I'm sorry. And thank you."

"Hey, I was the one who told you you could choose whatever you wanted, remember?" She had nothing to apologize for.

"It's all right for both of you to be selfish around me."

The flowers around the two seem to glow as Oichi sits back among them, head tilted and a smile on her face as she wipes her tears away with her fingers,

"Yes."

He stood up to leave. There was nothing he could do now that she's made her decision. He pauses though. Just for a moment before he reaches a hand out to ruffle her hair.

The gesture surprises her, and it shows before her face relaxes into a smile.

One by one, starting from the ones furthest from them, the flowers start to fade into darkness again. It isn't the murky, horrible darkness from before, but a velvety, night-like darkness that promises stars.

"Take care. Kyousuke."

And with those last words, Oichi fades away as well.
