Ryuuki had taken on the role as the head of the Shi family in Belicus, though he hadn't liked it. Still, he was able to do some good for the people of Reial by coming back and that was all that mattered in the end.

After a while though, he did manage to make some friends, people to make being chained to this city worth while. It was for them that he was willing to risk Kouyu's wrath and sneak out of the Shi family estate.

Ryuuki had a package tucked under one arm as he attempted so scale the wall surrounding the house. Because her father is scary and doesn't seem to believe that he has no ulterior motives for coming to see Shiho.

The only reason why Shiho's father became 100% scarier every time she so much as mentioned Ryuuki's name was probably because of the misunderstandings.

Like the time when Ryuuki had walked in on her in the bath. Or the time when they had tripped and ended up sprawled on each other and Ryuuki's hands had immediately gone to her waist to make sure she was okay.

Really, she could see why her father was angry with Ryuuki. She was his precious only daughter. But at the same time, she couldn't see why he was so worried when Ryuuki's brain was a dense brick and couldn't take a hint even when she batted her eyelashes at him till her head hurt.

She sighed as she unfastened the ribbon of her dress. If she was lucky, maybe that idiot would fall out a window and that would jump-start his brain.

And he'll forever insists that those weren't his fault. He really wasn't trying to do anything untoward to her! Honest! They were friends and his feelings for her were completely platonic!

When he makes it over the wall, it's easy enough to make it across the yard then up the vines to her window. He looks in to see if she was asleep (ah, but the lights are on so she probably isn't, right?) and sees her standing so, yes. Definitely wasn't asleep. He reaches out to knock on the window and...stops. Er.

That was the problem (according to Shiho).

When she hears the knock on the window, her first reaction is to immediately hold onto the front of her dress and slam the window open because perverts weren't getting away. Not on her watch.

--and when the window opens it hits Ryuuki in the face, because how is he even supposed to dodge like this!?

As it is, it's taking a lot of effort just to keep clinging to her window sill.

"Sh-Shiho! It's me!"

"R-Ryuuki? What are you doing at my window?"

She looks down, and clutches the dress to herself even tighter because oh god it was Ryuuki and why was he here and she wasn't properly dressed and-

There's a knock at her door.

ASDLKJLKJLKJGLKJASD.

"Get in here, you idiot. Yes?"

"I wanted to surprise you!" He wailed in return. He was trying to surprise you and you hit him in the face with a window! That hurt!

Ryuuki scrambled to hoist himself into the room. Well, first he had to scramble to get a good grip on the window sill so he could actually do that, but details.

She attempts to help him get into the room but freezes when he opens his mouth and all but gives away the fact that there's another person in the room with her.

A voice from the other side of the door asks, "Lady Sannomiya?"

One hand still holding the dress in a death-grip (because despite the fact that she flirted and draped herself on him, she was still thirteen and the thought of being seen is mortifying), she smacks the other hand over his mouth because why do you suck at reading the situation, Ryuuki?!

"Quiet! What? I'm changing!"

"Mmmph!!" Shiho. Shiho, he's just gotten a good grip on the window sill but he can't get in because you're pushing him back out by holding your hand against his mouth!

Oh, god, he was going to die, wasn't he?

"I..see. Your father is requesting for your presence in the-"

Shiho cuts the attendant off, "I know!"

She looks down...to see Ryuuki struggling and giving her a look that was definitely his 'help me Shiho, I'm going to die' look and she panics, "Tell him I'm coming and if he comes up again or you come in, I'm never speaking to him. Ever!"

She attempts to hold the dress up with her arms alone, and tries dragging Ryuuki in with both hands free. Just for good measure though, she turns and shouts at the door, "Never ever, you hear me?! Never!!"

Ryuuki might have rejoiced at the fact that Shiho was saving him except the mention of her father had him cowering silently. Shiho's father was honestly one of the most terrifying people he's ever met. One look and he could have Ryuuki confessing to every misdeed he's ever committed and even some he hadn't.

So he was staying quiet as a mouse as Shiho pulls him into her room.

It was a gift of her father's and made him extremely effective as a judge.

Crisis averted (or so Shiho hoped), she turns to Ryuuki, hand still holding up the dress, "I'm glad you came to surprise me...but you really have the worst timing, Ryuuki."

"Sorry."

Said Ryuuki while looking like a kicked puppy.

She considers staying angry for a bit longer. But she'd be lying to herself if she said that she was angry.

Besides, that kicked puppy look was very effective.

With a sigh, she reaches up to ruffle his hair, "Don't worry about it. Now help me with lacing this dress back up."

"Okay!" He set the bag down and went to work on that, only too happy to get back into her good graces.

He was surprisingly good at doing this. Though maybe not surprising given the rumours of his activities before he suddenly disappeared one night with Byakuya. (And eventually joined the crew of the Serenity, but that was a whole other story.)

Shiho has complicated feelings over how good he is at lacing her dress. On the one hand, he was close and smelled nice and she could feel her heart skip a beat when his fingers brush against the fabric of her dress.

On the other hand, the only way for a man to know how to lace a dress so quickly and so well could only mean that he had laced a lot of them in his lifetime. It isn't like she hadn't heard the rumours.

She lifts her hair up so he can tie the bow again, mood getting worse the more she thinks about it. "Hey. Promise me something."

It didn't even occur to him that this would cause any complicated feelings. If anything, he was quite pleased with himself.

Surely this will make up for the fact that he had bad timing, right? Absolutely!

"What is it?"

"My dress is going to be the last dress you ever lace up. Promise me?"


And it's phrased as a question, because Shiho wants to give him a choice to back out. But at the same time, the expression on her face when she looks at him says that this really isn't a choice.

He blinked. It wasn't such a big deal. It wasn't like he's done this at all since he came back from the Serenity.

Ryuuki just wasn't quite sure where this came from. Well, whatever the reason, he will promise her anyway. It's her birthday after all.

"I promise." He finished lacing up her dress and stepped back, looking far too proud of his accomplishment(?).

"There."

She pokes his cheek, because no one she liked would be allowed to look so proud of an accomplishment like that.

"And if you ever lace up another woman's dress, I'll kill you."

"Okay."

Then he actually stopped and processed her words. Then his eyes went wide.

"Wait. What? Why?"

"Figure that out yourself."

She does her very best to look impervious (and actually manages quite well) as she flips her hair over one shoulder and secures it with a glittering pin.

"...can't you give me a hint?"

"It's my birthday. I can do whatever I want."

It's her birthday!

Of course it was. Otherwise he wouldn't be here so late!

Ryuuki beamed at her and started rummaging in his bag, their current conversation completely put out of his mind.

"Shiho! I have something for you!"
