It was only natural that once it was late that Eagle didn't wander around outside. He had bad night vision.

And it was only natural that he thought Aqua shouldn't wander around. Firstly, she was a sea otter, and he was fairly certain that her night vision wasn't better than his. He wouldn't have been able to sleep thinking of her wandering around by herself. So he had asked her to stay for the night.

He can't exactly make her sleep on the ground, he prepares a bed for himself on the floor so she can take his couch.

Actually, sea otters had decent night vision, but Eagle had been so insistent that she didn't have the heart to say no.

So she just stepped outside to ask someone to deliver a message to her family so they didn't worry before going back into Eagle's home.

Aqua stopped when she noticed what he was doing.

"What are you doing, Eagle?"

"Oh, you're back."

He smiles at her as he rearranges the pillows for the umpteenth time, "I'm making a bed for myself."

"Is that where you normally sleep?"

"Um, no. Usually I sleep on the couch, but you're the guest."

He gestures at the couch, which has now been draped with a soft blanket, "So you can use it."

[blue_wayfinder]

"I can't make you do that." Never mind that there was another problem with this sleeping arrangement...

"I should take the floor instead. I'm the one inconveniencing you."

"Oh. I can't let you do that. The floor is really hard...it's not really good for your back, so...please take the couch."

[blue_wayfinder]

"If it's really hard then you shouldn't be sleeping on it either. Besides..." She trails off, before looking away, embarrassed. "...never mind."

Uh-oh.

"Do...Do you really not like the idea of sleeping on my couch........?"

[blue_wayfinder]

"No!" Her head snapped back up, eyes wide. "That's not it at all. Please don't misunderstand, I just..." She blushed. Great, how is she supposed to explain this?

"If it's something I did..."

Wow, now he's making himself depressed just thinking about that.

[blue_wayfinder]

"It's not you, it's...it's me." She bit her lip, not looking off to the side because she can't really look him in the eye and say this.

"I can't sleep without holding someone's hand."

This is so embarrassing to admit. She's not a pup any more!

Oh. That's.

That's really cute.

Um.

"W-Well...if you don't mind, I-I could..."

"I don't mind at all..." Quite the opposite, really. "I just wish I didn't cause you so many problems."

He shakes his head, "No, of course you're not causing problems. I mean...it's really cute-"

Oh. He just said. He turns away immediately and starts fluffing up the pillows on the couch for no real reason.

...he just called her cute. Aqua has been called many things but people did not often called cute.

She blushes and looks away, "Th-thank you."

"N-No. You don't have to thank me. Really. I didn't do anything. I'm sorry. I just. I. That is. I. Um."

He doesn't turn back to look at her but he can feel the blush spreading to his ears as he aggressively fluffs up the pillows. (Stop, Eagle. The fluff is probably going to start leaking out of the seams if you keep doing that...)

How about...they steer away from this embarrassing conversation.

"Here, let me help." Because she's not sure what you're doing to that pillow but she thinks maybe she should try to get it out of your hands for a little bit...

Sounds like a plan.

He thinks of holding onto the pillow. But then he remembers that right, they were supposed to be setting up...

Eagle relinquishes the pillow, but he turns his eyes away to stare at the roof of his house, "Um. Well. I guess then that we...we need to sleep together? Or."

Oh god, what if that wasn't it? He hadn't just said something embarrassing, right?

She blushed and looked away.

"...I guess so." She peeked at him from the corner of her eyes. "Unless you don't want to?"

"Yes! I mean, no! I mean...I-I want to, so. So...it's fine. Really!"


Oh, wow, he never noticed that his ceiling looked like that.

"Um..."

This really was very awkward wasn't it.

To avoid speaking, Aqua reaches out to help straighten the blanket.

It is super awkward.

Eagle kneels down, still avoiding eye contact as he starts arranging the pillows...

Wait. Should they be side by side? Was that weird...? Ah. But it was...kind of nice if they were side to side. It was like they were...were...married or something.

Eventually they are finished arranging the bed and there was nothing left to do except to stare at the ground.

This is still awkward. When is it going to stop being awkward?

Eagle is sitting very, very straight and staring down at the pattern of the blanket.

You can do this, Eagle.

He takes a deep breath and then he holds out his hand, "Um. You...You said you needed to hold hands, right?"
