The first thing that Akari had noticed when Shirogane stepped into her gondola was his hair. She imagined that if you could spin moonlight into thread, it would look like this man's hair.

And she'd told him this too, though all she got in return was a flat look. She took him to his destination with Alicia-san in her gondola (because she could not take a customer in her gondola without Alicia present. She was only a Single, after all).

She'd chatted happily with him even though he barely replied. She found out that he was a businessman from Man-home and that he was supposed to be on vacation even though he wasn't doing a very good job at it.

She loved Aqua and Neo-Venezia. Akari loved it so much at times that she was sure she could just burst and that's why...that's why she wanted him to take some fond memories back with him of Aqua.

So she set out to come to his hotel every day, after her morning practice with Aika was complete (Alice was already a Prima at this point and Akarai was so, so happy for her). She showed him around the city, sometimes on foot and sometimes on her gondola (though she never asked for payment because she can't carry a customer without Alicia-san yet). Sometimes she brought him to a place she knew, but sometimes she just picked a random direction ad kept going until he asked if she even knew where she was going (she didn't, of course. That was sort of the point).

Today though, today she hadn't been able to make it to his hotel on time. Alicia had surprised her earlier with her last exam and, she passed. The first thing...well, second thing she did after her glove came off (the first thing she did was hug Alicia-san) was to take her gondola to Shirogane's hotel. It wasn't her old black gondola but a beautiful white one befitting a Prima Undine. Alicia had smiled and told her to take it. "You're going to see your first customer as a Prima, right?"

And Akari didn't even bother asking how she knew because Alicia-san knew everything.

If he was still watching the window he'd see her coming on that gondola, with a bright smile and a happy flush on her face. She wasn't wearing her training glove though she wondered if he even knew what the significance of that or the colour of her gondola were...

Of course he knew the significance. He wasn't fool enough to live here without knowing something about the place. And when your self-appointed guide talked about Aqua with every other breath, you couldn't help but to buy a book on Aqua just so you could tell her that you already knew what she was saying so could she please stop talking and just let him enjoy the peace?

It was perfectly normal.

That didn't change the fact that she was late though and the moment he sees her, happy and probably oblivious over the fact that she was late, he pushes aside the thought that she looked most like she was in her element when she was like that, to focus on a lecture on The Importance of Punctuality.

And yet he'd never really told her to stop talking. She thinks that meant something.

Akari tied her gondola before running into the hotel, taking the stairs two at a time to get to his floor faster.

She stopped at his door to catch her breath before bringing up her hand to knock.

The door opens at the second knock, and Shirogane looks down at her with a frown, "You're late."

Her hand was still poised to knock again when the door opened. Sometimes, Akari wonders what Shirogane would look like if he smiled. People usually say that when a person smiled they became more beautiful, right?

Somehow though, when she really thought about it she'd think he was fine just like this. Because she didn't think he wasn't smiling because he was 'not happy' it was probably because of something like, 'this is just how he is.'

She smiled sheepishly, 'Hehe. I'm sorry for being late."

He sighs.

It isn't a sigh that says the person is tired, or angry.

It is the sigh of someone exhaling because they are angry and tired and they need to prepare to take in a whole new breath so they can properly lecture this person standing in front of them.

"Punctuality isn't a laughing matter."

He even crosses his arms so you can see that this is serious.

...ah. Did she just make things worse?

"I know." She wanted to sound apologetic and suitably serious about it, honest. But right now...right now she was so filled with so many emotions that she couldn't possibly act somber. "I really am sorry though. Something came up earlier and I didn't have the time to contact you."

"Your final exam. Right?"

He doesn't uncross his arms as he looks down at her though, but at least he's stopped frowning, "You could have contacted me before."

She stared for a moment.

"How did you know about that?" She hadn't even told Aika-chan or Alice-chan yet. The only people who knew were her and Alicia-san. "I didn't even know until late last night that my exam would be today."

"Your boat is now white. That's the sign of having passed your final exam and become a Prima Undine."

He doesn't have to phrase that in the form of a question, because he read it in a book and he remembers things he reads.

(Which is not the real problem when people are trying to get him to remember things. It's getting him to actually consider them important enough to bother reading about them that's the problem.)

"And if you didn't know: I don't sleep till very late."

Akari was surprised that he knew. It wasn't exactly a big secret but Shirogane was from Man-home and added to that he didn't seem particularly interested in Aqua or Neo-Venezia.

"That's right..."

But how did you know what colour my gondola is?

Then she remembered that Shirogane's window faced the waterways. The idea that he might have been watching for her have her a warm feeling as well as making her feel a guilty at having kept him waiting.

"You do?" She's never really asked about his sleep habits, now that she thought about it. "Ah, if I knew that I would have called you." Not just to tell him about being late but because when she was sitting in her bed last night, heart pounding from the knowledge that her exam was going to be the next day he had been one of the people she'd wanted to talk to.

"You can just remember it for the next time you're late."

And Shirogane doesn't even pause to wonder about why he would say a thing like that. It had practically become normal to see her every day, and he couldn't imagine her not showing up.

It was one of the reasons why he kept watch at his window when he was out of emails to answer.

"Then I'll make sure to call next time." Hopefully there won't be a next time, but with everything that was going to happen, all the things that were going to change in the coming weeks it was hard to say for sure that there won't be.

"Shall we go then?" Because she's still taking him out as she always did.

He nods, "Mm."

And then ducking back in briefly to get his keys from the dresser by his bed, he closes the door of his room behind him and locks it.

She waits for him to finish locking the door before she starts walking. She clasped her hands behind her back.

"Now that I'm a Prima I can take customers on my gondola one my own." Akari tilted her head, directing a smile at him. "Would you do me the honour of being my first customer, Shirogane-san?" Even though she didn't intend to make him pay so maybe customer wasn't the right word...

Of all the things he thought she would say, that wasn't one of them.

But...now that he really thinks about it, he should have expected it. It seemed the sentimental kind of thing that she would do. Well...what did he have to lose? Besides, it would probably be better if her customer was someone she had ferried before, he reasoned to himself.

"I don't mind."

"Great." She couldn't say exactly why she wanted to do this. All Akari knew was that when she stepped out of the gondola at the Aria Company, he was the first person she thought of.

The fact that she was late had only a little to do with it.

When they got to the lobby, Akari hurried to walk ahead so she could get the door for him with a smile.

He follows and lets out a breath, half-sigh and half-laugh when he sees her opening the door with a smile. He reaches a hand to brush against it, out of habit as he goes out into the Aquan afternoon.

Shirogane, she learned over the course of their time together, did not laugh often. Even when he did it was never that overt, but it always made her happy to know that she managed to draw something like that out of him.

Akari follows him out the door. Her white gondola, which had been tied outside the hotel, bobbed lightly in the water.

Shirogane hardly noticed it himself sometimes when he laughed or smiled, unless someone pointed it out to him. But it softened him, that was what Kengo had said to him once. (Followed by Akira's flippant 'Yeah, it's freaky.')

He looks down at the pure white gondola. It's a drastic change from her old black one, and he lets his eyes follow the beautifully-made craft, appreciating how well it suits its purpose before he turns to Akari, "Well?"

She laughed a little under her breath before stepping onto the back of the gondola. She turned, holding one hand, palm up, out to him.

"Please give me your hand." This was supposed to be more official, after all.

Thankfully, he knows how it works by now and he doesn't even hesitate when he takes her hand and steps onto the gondola.

She made sure to wait until he was seated before poling away from the hotel.

"Is there anywhere in particular you wanted to go today?"

A slight breeze skims through his hair, and he brushes it out of his eyes as the gondola begins moving.

"Somewhere I haven't been before."

Akari takes a moment to think about it.

"I can take you to see one of the out lying islands."
