The burrowing succeeds in breaking Shirogane's concentration. Partly because a cat that size attempting to burrow under the crook of your arm so it could put its head on your leg usually dislodge whatever was already on your legs in the first place.

In this case, it was his computer. Shirogane manages to catch it, arms raised and giving Aria-shachou ample space to plop his head onto Shirogane's leg like a large and very blank-looking bun. He gives Akari a sigh, "I can't work like this."

Akari smiles as she watches their antics. Really, they were both so cute.

She sets her teacup down with a 'clink' before moving around the table to where they were sitting. She reaches out to pull Aria-shachou into her arms. Which was pretty easy, given that even if he liked Shirogane as Akari said, he still liked Akari more.

"Aria-shachou, it's not good if you interrupt Shirogane-san's work." She chided gently, "I'm sure he must have some very important things to do, so you can come sit with me, okay?"

Aria-shachou removed, Shirogane sets the computer back down and continues browsing through the windows. Of course, it would probably have been easier to do this back at his own house, but illogical as it was, Akari's presence was comforting.

And, he rationalized, with a laptop it really didn't matter where he did his work.

He takes the cup of tea from the table between them and takes a sip so as not to waste it by letting it grow cold.

Akari sat back down with Aria-shachou on her lap, giggling as she cuddled him.

"Aria-shachou's winter coat looks like it would be very warm." Aria-shachou let out a long 'puinyaaaaa' in reply to that.

It's at that moment that he gets a ping on his work e-mail.

From Kou.

With an annoyed look at the computer as if it were somehow responsible for whatever stupidity Kou had come up with this time (mini-skirts as their mandatory company uniform? Group date? Flowers on Pluto?) he opens it.

What he's greeted with are three lines written in an orange-gold font colour (which Shirogane had talked to Kou for more than once. Write in black, you stupid dog.)

To Shirogane:

Shirogane stops flicking back and forth between windows as he holds his tea in one hand wondering what the fuck that even means.

Akari was busy rubbing Aria-shachou's soft belly when he got his email, laughing and mostly oblivious to the look Shirogane was directing at his laptop screen.

When she looked up though, she definitely noticed the lack of movement from his end. She blinked and titled her head even whil Aria-shachou squirmed in her arms,

"Shirogane-san?"

Wholly focused on the email, Shirogane doesn't even hear Akari calling his name as he stares at the laptop screen with a frown.

'Practice. That meant...practicing kissing if the timing of this is any indication.'

But how was he supposed to practice?

He thinks back on the books he had read (that were not really about kissing, but contained some information nonetheless)....He wasn't practicing on his hand.

Akari and Aria-shachou shared a look. Akari had to admit she was a little worried since he looked troubled by something.

She leaned over to set Aria-shachou on the ground before moving to sit beside Shirogane. Akari wasn't going to peek at his screen (that would be rude). She is peering at his face though.

"Is everything all right?"

The movement of her sitting down breaks his concentration on the computer screen and he looks at her, expression a little lost as he stares and finds himself thinking,

'I could practice on her.'

She was here, wasn't she? And they were romantically involved, and practicing on Akari, the person he was supposed to kiss made sense, didn't it?. She was nothing like his hand, and it wasn't like he could practice on another person. He was sure that was what they called 'infidelity'. And there was no one else he wanted to practice on.

Which is why, after a moments hesitation, he's looking at her seriously, "Akari. I want to kiss you."

"Oh, is that all? I thought it was something..." She trailed off when what he said actually registered. "Hahi!? W-what did you just say?"

She hadn't heard him? Or was there something wrong with what he had said?

He frowns when he repeats it again, "I want to kiss you, Akari. You have a problem with it?"

"That's not it!"

What was it that Aika had said? Kissing is a natural part of dating...?

If it was a natural part then why was her heart beating so fast?

"You just surprised me..."

"...Why?"

He didn't think it was that surprising of a question. And even if it had surprised her, she should have been able to give him a response, right?

An actual response.

"Because I didn't expect you to say that all of a sudden." Then again, when she thought about it, it probably wasn't 'all of a sudden'. Knowing him, there was probably a thought process behind it that she hadn't been privy to.

"...I've been thinking about it for a while."

Thirty-two days and four hours, to be exact.

Although now that he has time to pause and think about it, it probably did seem like it was sudden. But Kou had given him the idea, and he had decided to roll with it because the logic of it had been sound.

He's not too sure about that now.

She was right about that then.

When Akari really calmed down and thought about it, though, her reaction might have made him uncomfortable. For all that Shirogane seemed unflappable, she knew that he did care a lot about her. She didn't want him to think he'd done anything wrong.

She breathed in deeply. For some reason, this was kind of hard to say. Despite how Aika insists that what Akari said was embarrassing, she's never seen them as anything like that. It was why the words could come out of her mouth so easily. This, though...this was embarrassing.

"I-I want to kiss you too, Shirogane-san."

There's a noticeable relaxing of Shirogane's shoulders when he hears that, and the expression on his face as he looks at her is warm with the knowledge that he hasn't committed some kind of horrible, irredeemable mistake.

"Good."

He takes a deep breath before putting the computer down on the table and closing the distance between them on the couch. One arm rests against the top of the couch as he turns to face her properly and leans forward.

To say that she hadn't expected any of this when she let him in the door would be an understatement. If Akari had been asked what she thought what their afternoon would be like she'd probably say that it would be like every other time he's been over. They'll sit together while works with tea and maybe cakes. He would work and she'd alternate between getting some papers organized and watching him.

Never did kissing ever factor into it.

Once she's said it though...she knew she meant it.

Her heart was beating fast now and Akari was almost afraid it would leap out of her chest. She didn't move away though, when Shirogane leans forward.

Kissing had never really factored into Shirogane's life up till this moment. Before it, he had always placed work, work, and his responsibilities to his work. As far as he was concerned, kissing and relationships were things that happened to other people (who didn't want to work). It wasn't for lack of trying from other people, because even though he didn't really see it, he was apparently attractive. But it didn't take long for admirers to leave because all he talked about was work, and because all he wanted was to work.

That was one of the reasons, he supposed, why he and Akari were together still after nine months. Because she understood that.

And without any arguments about which-was-more-important-work-or-me, he could focus on her. What had started as respect for Akari as a person had, before he even noticed, become the comforting, warming feeling of genuinely enjoying her company and wanting to spend time with her, wanting to hear what she had to say.

Which is why, when he leans in and his lips brush chastely against hers, what he wants more than anything is to make her happy.

It would be an unfair to make him choose between her and work. It never even occurred to her to even try.

Akari herself had many things that were important to her: her friendnship with Aika-chan and Alice-chan, Aria-shachou, being an undine, Alice-san, Neo-Venezia and even her relationship with Shirogane-san. Every one of those things were important to her and she was so incredibly lucky to have so many. Every one made her life that much brighter and fuller...how could she possibly pick one and say that it was more important than the others?

So Akari is happy (so, very, very happy) that Shirogane also has so many things that were important to him.

When their lips touch, Akari stops breathing for a moment. She had no idea what she was supposed to do. Where is she supposed to put her hands? Should she close her eyes? Would that be rude?

Her lips were soft (although he mentally slapped Kou for the cliche he was sure had only gotten into his head because of that stupid dog) and she smelled of salt and water and soap. When he draws back, he's aware that her eyes are still open.

He is worried as he looks at her,

"...What's wrong?"

"N-nothing's wrong!" Akari isn't entirely sure what she was doing. She didn't have a single clue. Looking at his expression, though, she could tell he was probably as new to this as she was.

Oddly enough, that made her feel a little better.

"You're sure...right?"

Because he was new at this, had absolutely no idea what he was doing, and had to stoop to asking advice from that dog.

It had to be perfect.

"...I am." Her reply was soft and her ears were burning, but she said it without hesitating.

She did hesitate though when she reached a hand out to touch his cheek. "Could you...kiss me again?"

That...was good, right? If she wanted him to kiss her again, he could realistically assume that she hadn't found the experience horrible. Right?

With that in mind, he takes a deep breath before the hand not on the couch reaches up to cup against her cheek and he pulls her close.

This kiss is less hesitant, since he'd gotten the first one over with (and not failed). He lets his lips linger on hers for just a moment longer than before, content in her closeness.
