There's a noticeable relaxing of Shirogane's shoulders when he hears that, and the expression on his face as he looks at her is warm with the knowledge that he hasn't committed some kind of horrible, irredeemable mistake.

"Good."

He takes a deep breath before putting the computer down on the table and closing the distance between them on the couch. One arm rests against the top of the couch as he turns to face her properly and leans forward.

To say that she hadn't expected any of this when she let him in the door would be an understatement. If Akari had been asked what she thought what their afternoon would be like she'd probably say that it would be like every other time he's been over. They'll sit together while works with tea and maybe cakes. He would work and she'd alternate between getting some papers organized and watching him.

Never did kissing ever factor into it.

Once she's said it though...she knew she meant it.

Her heart was beating fast now and Akari was almost afraid it would leap out of her chest. She didn't move away though, when Shirogane leans forward.

Kissing had never really factored into Shirogane's life up till this moment. Before it, he had always placed work, work, and his responsibilities to his work. As far as he was concerned, kissing and relationships were things that happened to other people (who didn't want to work). It wasn't for lack of trying from other people, because even though he didn't really see it, he was apparently attractive. But it didn't take long for admirers to leave because all he talked about was work, and because all he wanted was to work.

That was one of the reasons, he supposed, why he and Akari were together still after nine months. Because she understood that.

And without any arguments about which-was-more-important-work-or-me, he could focus on her. What had started as respect for Akari as a person had, before he even noticed, become the comforting, warming feeling of genuinely enjoying her company and wanting to spend time with her, wanting to hear what she had to say.

Which is why, when he leans in and his lips brush chastely against hers, what he wants more than anything is to make her happy.

It would be an unfair to make him choose between her and work. It never even occurred to her to even try.

Akari herself had many things that were important to her: her friendnship with Aika-chan and Alice-chan, Aria-shachou, being an undine, Alice-san, Neo-Venezia and even her relationship with Shirogane-san. Every one of those things were important to her and she was so incredibly lucky to have so many. Every one made her life that much brighter and fuller...how could she possibly pick one and say that it was more important than the others?

So Akari is happy (so, very, very happy) that Shirogane also has so many things that were important to him.

When their lips touch, Akari stops breathing for a moment. She had no idea what she was supposed to do. Where is she supposed to put her hands? Should she close her eyes? Would that be rude?

Her lips were soft (although he mentally slapped Kou for the cliche he was sure had only gotten into his head because of that stupid dog) and she smelled of salt and water and soap. When he draws back, he's aware that her eyes are still open.

He is worried as he looks at her,

"...What's wrong?"

"N-nothing's wrong!" Akari isn't entirely sure what she was doing. She didn't have a single clue. Looking at his expression, though, she could tell he was probably as new to this as she was.

Oddly enough, that made her feel a little better.

"You're sure...right?"

Because he was new at this, had absolutely no idea what he was doing, and had to stoop to asking advice from that dog.

It had to be perfect.

"...I am." Her reply was soft and her ears were burning, but she said it without hesitating.

She did hesitate though when she reached a hand out to touch his cheek. "Could you...kiss me again?"

That...was good, right? If she wanted him to kiss her again, he could realistically assume that she hadn't found the experience horrible. Right?

With that in mind, he takes a deep breath before the hand not on the couch reaches up to cup against her cheek and he pulls her close.

This kiss is less hesitant, since he'd gotten the first one over with (and not failed). He lets his lips linger on hers for just a moment longer than before, content in her closeness.

This time it was a lot less awkward and she found herself being a lot more relaxed even though her heart was still hammering in her chest.

This was nice. Very nice. She reached up her hand to cup his face when--

"Punyuuuu."

Akari pulls back at Aria-shachou's terrified cry and...eh? Where's Aria-shachou?

"Puinyuuuuuuuuu."

She looks towards the source of the sound and there was Aria-shachou, clinging onto the top of the bookshelf for dear life.

"A-Aria-shachou!?"

Shirogane also looks towards the top of the bookshelf and then...he sighs.

Mostly in annoyance. Not in annoyance that Aria-shachou had technically interrupted. He wasn't annoyed about that. As far as he was concerned, he had meant to kiss Akari twice, and had kissed her twice. That was good enough.

He was annoyed that a cat that pudgy didn't have any business in climbing bookshelves. He gets up from the couch, and walks over, reaching his hand toward the cat, "Come here."

Akari follows behind him. Unlike Shirogane she was just worried about Aria-shachou.

"Aria-shachou, it's all right. We won;t let you get hurt."

Possibly a cat that pudgy also shouldn't jump on people, but that's exactly what Aria-shachou does when Shirogane extends a hand to him.

Shirogane wouldn't worry about Aria-shachou. Cats landed on their feet more often than not. And besides, he was sure Aria-shachou would bounce if he didn't.

The weight does nearly knock him off balance as once again, he wonders what Akari has been feeding this cat to get it to this size. He steadies himself, shifting Aria-shachou so that he is now hanging over his shoulder.

Now that he is no longer in danger of falling (and has a different view of the room thanks to Shirogane's height), Aria-shachou lets out a pleased, "Punyuuuu~"

It was completely not her fault. Aria-shachou had already been this plump when she came to Aqua.

She automatically brings her hands to Shirogane's back in case he needed the support. She breathed a sigh of relief though, when nothing happened.

"Aria-shachou...what were you even doing up there?"

"Punyuuuu! Punyuuu!"

And now Aria-shachou was moving one paw to hit it against Shirogane's shoulder as he explained. Shirogane just sighs. There really is no winning against this cat.

He starts walking towards the couch so he can dump Aria-shachou somewhere safe.

"Aria-shachou..." She trailed off after hearing Aria-shacho's explanation. "I'm sorry but I don't really understand."

Shirogane sets him on the couch as Aria-shachou continues explaining, obviously still excited and not at all worried that Akari didn't understand him right now. She would eventually understand! He believed!

Shirogane in the meantime had ceased listening, and is instead thinking back on the e-mail. Not to reconsider sending Kou to Pluto, of course. That wasn't up for discussion.

But 'practice makes perfect.'

He looks at Akari again before crossing his arms over his chest and thinking some more.

Meanwhile, Akari was busy trying to figure out what Aria-shachou was trying to tell her.

That wasn't to say though, that she had missed the way Shirogane looked at her. There were just...more pressing matters to take care of right now.

Also, for the record, she totally didn't blush when she saw him looking at her.

He notices her blushing, and is quiet for a bit as he watches her until he takes a deep breath and makes his decision.

"Akari."

"Yes?"

He leans down and gives her a quick peck on the lips before he walks away.

Because practice makes perfect.

Akari's hand came up to touch her lips in surprise after he left, blushing slightly.

She was surprised by that kiss, but at the same time...she liked it. She didn't snap out of her stupor until Aria-shachou prodded her.
