And maybe it's the fact that he's seeing her again after so long, or the fact that it's true, but his voice is quiet as he watches the gentle ripples that follow as the gondola drifts through the water, "...It did."

"I really missed being able to talk to you."

E-mails and the occasional video chat, just couldn't compare to actually being able to talk to him in person.

"The e-mails and the video chat aren't the same thing as talking in person."

He wondered if she was thinking that too.

She laughs.

"That's what I was just thinking."

It doesn't take long after that for them to arrive at Shirogane's new home. The building itself is made of sandy brick, and the doors and shutters are painted a neutral gray-blue with brass knobs. The street itself is fairly quiet, with only a few passersby walking around.

She stopped the gondola outside.

"Here we are."

He starts fishing for his keys as he alights from the gondola.

She watches him for a moment without saying anything.

Akari still remembers seeing him everyday the last time he was here. It...probably won't be possible to do that any more. She was going to be busy and so was he.

And yet she didn't feel lonely at all.

"Shirogane-san?"

Shirogane can't really appreciate the heavy iron key he's using to unlock the door. Electronic keys were so much simpler.

"What?"

"Will you be free in the afternoon tomorrow?"

He has to think about that for a bit.

"...Yes. But why?"

"I want to take you out for buttered potatoes."

Oh, that's right. They used to go out for those a lot while he was here on vacation...didn't they?

"...I see. That's fine."

"Then I'll come by tomorrow and take you there. They taste even better now that it's colder."

"That doesn't make any sense."

The cold shouldn't change how something tastes.

"It's because it's warm." She smiled brightly. "When you eat something warm when it's cold it feels really comforting. It's not a feeling you get when it's warm outside too."

But she supposed he wouldn't know. Man-Home didn't have seasons the way they did here, after all.

Because this place had seasons and actually got cold....that's right. He'd almost forgotten.

"Is that...so..."

Having lived all his life in Man-Home and only spending summer in Neo-Venezia though, he doesn't sound to sure that he believes her.

"You'll just have to see for yourself tomorrow."

"Fine. Will you be by at the usual time?"

Somewhere, Kou feels like he just missed the chance to get on Shirogane's case for having a "usual time".

"Of course."

"Then I'll make time for you."

That brought a bright smile to her face.

"I look forward to it!"

"...Is there anything else?"

"No." Then she paused...then laughed. "Actually, there is one thing."

She laced her hands behind her back and smiled at him with her head canted a little to one side.

"Welcome back."

There is a slight softening in his eyes when he hears that, because missed it. He missed her.

His expression remains as steely as ever though, "I'm back."
