"It would have been better if you had planned it. What kind of a moron lets it get to the point where their own damn heart stops?!"

She had scared him. And even now, seeing her looking so fragile against her pillows, scared him to death. He's pacing back and forth, though not getting anywhere near the bed as he continues lecturing her on the importance of health, and knowing your own limits.

Sakaki had long since left with a cheerful grin and a wave in Fujiko's direction. Shirogane hadn't even noticed.

"What kind of person plans for their heart to stop? More importantly, are you calling Fujiko a moron!?"

If she didn't know he was doing it out of worry she would have thrown something at him for that. Actually, now that she thinks about it, the person she really wanted to throw something at was Sakaki.

(She'll remember this, you bastard.)

"Yes, I am."

He didn't care if she threw something at him. His pacing has taken him to the side of her bed. Shirogane doesn't reach out to touch her though, because he's scared. If she had died.

One hand clenches into a tight fist, "If you had died-"

If he won't reach out then she will. She leans over and catches his wrist in her hand and stared at him hard.

"But I didn't."

"But if you had-"

He bites his lip and turns away, leaving the sentence unfinished.

His thoughts though, are not so guarded, If you had died, I don't know what I would have done.

There's frustration there, at her, at himself, fear that he could have lost her and an emotion even he had never really given a name to. A warm feeling that had developed when he hadn't been paying attention, a feeling that now made him want to do nothing more than to hold her close, to make sure that she was really alright, and then to protect her from everything that could ever hurt her.

Her grip on his wrist tightened.

When he held her hand it was an invitation for her to look, but even when she didn't try it was incredibly easy to over-hear his thoughts. Shirogane, despite being very tight-lipped about his feelings had surprisingly loud thoughts.

It made her heart clench uncomfortably in an entirely different way.

Fujiko's grip relaxed after a moment and she smiled at him ruefully.

"...I'm horrible, aren't I?" Making him go through this...

He doesn't return the smile, but he does glare at her.

"You're an idiot, that's what you are."

Take care of yourself. If you can't, then at least let me take care of you.

She laughed, but it sounded empty even to her.

It's not possible, she wanted to tell him. Sakaki had already told her what she can do to help fix this but she couldn't take it. She was still tied down to the past. Somehow she couldn't bring herself to say it though. Not when he was looking at her like that, not when she could hear his thoughts this clearly.

The hand on his wrist slid down to hold his hand. If he allowed it, she'll bring it up to press her face against it.

"It looks like...I've done something terribly cruel."

Shirogane is too tired to protest it. Besides, the feeling of her face against his hand is comforting.

He doesn't know what to say to her though. He had read the files after all. He had a good idea that it probably wouldn't have been possible. He was being an idiot.

Gritting his teeth, he sits down on the bed and pulls her into a tight hug as if that could be enough to make everything okay again.

It couldn't. Nothing could fix this because it stretched too far into the past. Nothing had been okay for decades: it was too late to change things now. She knew this and yet, when she returned his embrace she wanted to pretend that it would be fine.

It was funny. She had been ready to die for years now. She had grown accustomed to thinking of the future and the present as something that didn't belong to her. Yet now...now she found she wasn't ready to leave him behind.

She wraps on arm over his shoulder and the other goes to the back of his head, as if trying to comfort him.

He buries his face into her hair, and her scent isn't as comforting as it normally was.

Maybe it was because what he thought would be forever has suddenly shown itself to have an end date. He had never expected this. He couldn't imagine his life without her there. He didn't want to have to imagine something like that.

"Don't ever scare me like that again."

It didn't matter if it was a lie.

She could lie like she did with Minamoto and the Children. It would be so easy and it would take a load off his mind...but it would be temporary.

In the end, Fujiko couldn't make that kind of promise because she wouldn't be able to keep it and she knew (she just knew) that he would never forgive her for it.

So she holds onto him tightly and avoids the topic altogether. He will probably understand why even if he didn't want to believe it.

"Sometimes I think it would have been better if I had been born later. If I had I could have stayed with you for the rest of your life." She could tell him that she'll do her best to stay with him until the very end. She could love him without reservation or care about the future. She laughed. "But I guess maybe you wouldn't have liked me. I was very unreasonable when I was younger."

For the longest time, he doesn't say anything.

He isn't sure if the fact that she doesn't lie to him is a good thing or not. Because it meant that even if she lied...it wouldn't have made a difference. Is that it?

Shirogane presses a kiss to her head with a heavy sigh. "You say that like you aren't unreasonable now."

The thought of living the rest of his life with her...was a nice thought. A painful one, because as he held her tight he knew that it could never be. But just for a moment, maybe that's what they both needed. A beautiful lie.

She laughed because if she doesn't she might start to cry. She had been strong for so many years now, she could be strong now. Just a little longer...for his sake.

She leaned into that kiss, "Trust me when I say I'm much better now." She paused then added as an after thought. "And don't call Fujiko unreasonable."

Fujiko had given up on so many things, among them the possibility of ever having a family, because how could she have one when she will have to minimize the time she spent awake? Yet she finds herself thinking...it would have been nice to have one with this man. Maybe it could have fill the void her comrades' deaths had left behind. At the very least, even no woman ever wanted to get old, she thinks...she would have been fine with it if it were with him.

But that's impossible.

"I'll call it like it is."

But he does sit on the bed, holding her hands, "...next time..."

Because he knew without a doubt that there was probably going to be a next time.

"...Let me know."

"It probably won't happen again any time soon." She brought his hand up, placing a kiss on the inside of his wrist before pressing it against her cheek.

"Sakaki says I need to hibernate until my situation stabilizes." She pouted at him, finding some of her usual cheer and energy again. "It looks like we'll have to cancel our date next week."

The one she was going to tell you about the day of when she came to kidnap you from work.

He should have guessed it would be something like that when he heard the word 'date'.

Shirogane gently strokes her cheek with his thumb, frown still in place, "Then we'll just make plans for when you wake up from hibernation, idiot."

She closed her eyes, just enjoying the feeling of his hand on her cheek. That warm hand...when will she get the chance to hold it again?

"It might be a very long time from now. I said a few months would do, but Sakaki said he won't let me come out of hibernation until he says it's all right."

"Then I can at least get caught up on paperwork and projects until you're ready."

Because in case she didn't know, he isn't able to work when he spends time with her. He has a mini back-log of paperwork on future projects to go through.

...she should have expected that, huh?

Well, at least he'll have something to occupy himself with until she comes out of hibernation.

"If I didn't know better I'd think you loved your work more than you love me." But that's not true. Not if he was here instead of in the R&D office.

"I'm here now, aren't I?"

Shirogane doesn't look to happy to be told that. He had abandoned his work to come down here, you know.

"...I know." She reached out to touch his cheek. "Fujiko was only pulling your leg."

"Is this really the time to be telling jokes?"

He leans into her touch almost unconsciously, his face serious.

"Why not? It's as good a time as any, I say."

Her fingers curled slightly against his cheek, as if she couldn't decide between drawing back and cupping his cheek.

"Shirogane? Can I ask you to promise me something?"

"....That depends on what you're asking."
