She laughed because if she doesn't she might start to cry. She had been strong for so many years now, she could be strong now. Just a little longer...for his sake.

She leaned into that kiss, "Trust me when I say I'm much better now." She paused then added as an after thought. "And don't call Fujiko unreasonable."

Fujiko had given up on so many things, among them the possibility of ever having a family, because how could she have one when she will have to minimize the time she spent awake? Yet she finds herself thinking...it would have been nice to have one with this man. Maybe it could have fill the void her comrades' deaths had left behind. At the very least, even no woman ever wanted to get old, she thinks...she would have been fine with it if it were with him.

But that's impossible.

"I'll call it like it is."

But he does sit on the bed, holding her hands, "...next time..."

Because he knew without a doubt that there was probably going to be a next time.

"...Let me know."

"It probably won't happen again any time soon." She brought his hand up, placing a kiss on the inside of his wrist before pressing it against her cheek.

"Sakaki says I need to hibernate until my situation stabilizes." She pouted at him, finding some of her usual cheer and energy again. "It looks like we'll have to cancel our date next week."

The one she was going to tell you about the day of when she came to kidnap you from work.

He should have guessed it would be something like that when he heard the word 'date'.

Shirogane gently strokes her cheek with his thumb, frown still in place, "Then we'll just make plans for when you wake up from hibernation, idiot."

She closed her eyes, just enjoying the feeling of his hand on her cheek. That warm hand...when will she get the chance to hold it again?

"It might be a very long time from now. I said a few months would do, but Sakaki said he won't let me come out of hibernation until he says it's all right."

"Then I can at least get caught up on paperwork and projects until you're ready."

Because in case she didn't know, he isn't able to work when he spends time with her. He has a mini back-log of paperwork on future projects to go through.

...she should have expected that, huh?

Well, at least he'll have something to occupy himself with until she comes out of hibernation.

"If I didn't know better I'd think you loved your work more than you love me." But that's not true. Not if he was here instead of in the R&D office.

"I'm here now, aren't I?"

Shirogane doesn't look to happy to be told that. He had abandoned his work to come down here, you know.

"...I know." She reached out to touch his cheek. "Fujiko was only pulling your leg."

"Is this really the time to be telling jokes?"

He leans into her touch almost unconsciously, his face serious.

"Why not? It's as good a time as any, I say."

Her fingers curled slightly against his cheek, as if she couldn't decide between drawing back and cupping his cheek.

"Shirogane? Can I ask you to promise me something?"

"....That depends on what you're asking."

"Can't you just promise without asking that for once?"

"No."

She sighs and the hand on his face moves to pinch his cheek.

"In a situation like this you're supposed to promise me anything I want no matter how unreasonable it is."

He frowns at the pinch, "If you weren't constantly asking me to promise unreasonable things, I wouldn't have to ask first."

In response to the frown she actually pulls at his face.

"It's my right as your girlfriend to ask unreasonable things of you."

".....Fine. Then, ask."

She stopped pinching him and cupped his face.

"I want you to be happy. What ever happens, I want you to find someone to settle d I wn with and have a beautiful family. " She stroked his cheek with her thumb, her smile soft. Those were things she could never give him. "But, no matter what happens, please leave a little place in your heart for me, okay?"

He narrows his eyes as he listens, voice tense and angry yet again,

"Nothing is going to happen."

Let him have his denial.

She could lie and let him have his denial. She could also burst his bubble.

Fujiko wasn't sure which would be the right thing to do to be honest. She had spent decades being sure of what she was doing that it was a little strange to suddenly be at a lost again.

Whatever happened, though, she was determined to not repeat her old mistakes. This time, she won't have him be the one who needs to comfort her.

"...always so stubborn." Pig-headed, was the word she sometimes used in her head, "But I love you for it."

There's a beat before he's pulling her close and holding her tightly.

There's a moment when she doesn't react, then she relaxes against him. Her arms come up more slowly, holding onto him gently.

She really had been too selfish and cruel.

"I won't promise something like that."

All he wants to do is to keep holding her in the hopes that it could make everything okay.

But he would tuck that promise he had never made away into his heart, and it would come back to haunt him later.

If she knew that was the effect it had, she wouldn't have said it. Sadly, precognition wasn't one of the powers she possessed.

She leans her head to the side, letting it rest against his.

"Honestly." she said with a laugh that was helpless but didn't sound choked (she had to wonder how she managed that). "You won't even promise a girl you'll love her forever?"

She didn't want to upset him, she was realizing that more and more. Still, what can she do?
