"I should have guessed."

Because it wouldn't be Ryuuki if he didn't buy a whole shipment of bears, or a whole shipment of pillows, or enough rocking chairs for a small town.

"I think I've told you this before, but even if I was having triplets they wouldn't need that many bears."

"But this way if it gets ruined we can just replace it!" Because he was imagining how much fun their baby would have with the bear and then he started imagining a devastated, crying face when the bear had to be thrown away because it was damaged beyond repair.

She smiles at him, eyes fond even though her tone of voice is exasperated (just a bit).

"They can tell, you know."

Shiho puts a hand on her stomach, "If you replace it, they can tell."

Ryuuki had a deer-in-headlights look on his face.

"Th-they can?" No one told him that! Then he wouldn't be able to prevent their child from crying because the bear had to be thrown away!? "Even if we're really careful? Maybe we could tell them the bear went to the hospital instead? The toy hospital!"

She's about to tell him not to turn into a lying daddy when the hand on her stomach stills and she winces.

I suppose you wouldn't.

Ryuuki was already borderline freaking out (because he didn't want to see their child cry!) seeing Shiho wince only made things worse.

"Sh-Shiho!? What's wrong? Is the baby coming!? Oh god, the baby's coming isn't it!!??"

Please excuse your husband as he FREAKS OUT and putters around the room flailing as he looks for the baby bag...or maybe he should get his journal and contact somebody? Wait. Maybe he should just--

Shiho starts standing up from her blanket nest in order to stop her husband, "No! The baby just kicked me, Ryuuki!"

"Don't stand up!"

He is totally still freaking out. Can you tell?

"You might fall! Or-or worse!"

She's standing up and reaching for him, "I'm not going to fall! Calm down! Hey!"

Her reaching out for him gets him to stop flailing at least (because what if he hits her!?).

His entire body goes completely stiff though (because what if he hurts her!?). He may even be holding his breath at the moment.

Shiho takes his hands with a smile and a sigh, "Come here, you idiot Ryuuki."

She pulls his hands towards her, and places them on her stomach.

He was still holding his breath when she placed his hand over her stomach.

He couldn't keep it up, however, when he felt their baby kick. Ryuuki gasped then, as if it was the most wonderful, miraculous thing that ever happened. (Which it was. It didn't matter how many time he felt or feels this happening it never stops being amazing.)

"Was that the baby?"

"Mm-hmm."

She draws circles on his hand with her thumb, "The baby's been really active today."

He stares at her stomach in wonderment...then suddenly frowned and looked back at her face.

"Does it hurt you?"

Shiho smiles, "I'd be lying if I said it didn't. But I think...it's worth it. It's ours, after all. Our baby."

"Our baby..." He still sounded so amazed as he looks back down at her stomach, Our baby. His and Shiho's baby.

"Amazing..." He looked up again. "You're amazing."

Shiho smiles at him fondly then gives him a gentle poke on the forehead.

"Idiot."

He was a little mystified about being called an idiot all of a sudden, but more than that there was an over-whelming sense of joy bubbling inside him.

In response, he pushed past her hand and leaned over to press a kiss on her lips.

That feeling of joy was like champagne, she decided, as she returned the kiss with a smile.

Ryuuki didn't know if it was like champagne, but he knew it was such a wonderful feeling that he can't help but want to hold onto it forever and ever.

He brings a hand up to cup her face.

Shiho leans into his touch, bringing one hand up to cover his.

Ryuuki's mind, as always, is an open book. Or rather, like an open audio book that just reads out-loud for anyone to hear even if they're not trying to listen.

I love you. I want you to be happy. I'm scared. I would be lost without you. Don't grow up to hate me.

Shiho pulls back with a sigh and a wry smile,

"Idiot. The baby will love you. Just like I love you."

She presses a kiss against the corner of his mouth, "Super idiot."

That was not enough to alleviate his worries though. He brought a hand up to the back of her head.

"...but what if I mess up? I don't...I don't know how a father is supposed to..."

Because he's never really known his father, because most of his childhood memories involved hiding in the gardens or in the cellar and hoping no one found him.

And Shiho could never fully bring herself to forgive the people in his childhood because of that.

She has to crane her head a bit to look up at him, but she doesn't mind, "Just be yourself. Ryuuki is great the way he is. As long as you want to try hard for our baby's sake, there's no way they'll hate you. Okay?"
