She was joking.

"Sorry, sorry." She leans over to kiss him on the cheek. "It's just you're too much fun to tease so Fujiko couldn't help it."

Shirogane just sighs, almost used to this already.

"Then? What are you going to teach me?"

"Something simple, I guess?"

She laughs.

"It's been a while since Fujiko took lessons so I'm not sure!" It has been a while, after all. Ah, but if she doesn't think of something he's probably going to get up and leave...

He really does want to get up and leave. Instead, he crosses his arms and gives her an unimpressed look.

She could see his intentions clearly written on his face. Sometimes, he was just so transparent.

She smiled before placing her hands on the keys again and idly played the melody she was playing when he came in. The smile was different from her usual ones, more quiet and soft (and just a little bit lonely).

"Sorry, Fujiko just wanted to keep you for herself a little while longer."

He doesn't uncross his arms, and the unimpressed look is probably there to stay, but at least the reason why he's making that face are now different.

"You only have to ask, you idiot."

And he'd stay. He'd gripe and complain, but no matter what, he'd choose to stay. Every single time.

"...I know." She knew by now that he always would stay for her. Even if he seemed to love his work above all else she knows that, when push comes to shove, he would choose to be by her side.

On some days, it made her feel warm in a way she hadn't in years. On other days, it made her chest tighten because she knew what she was doing was selfish. Those belonging to the past had no right monopolizing the affections of someone in the present.

Most of the time, though, she was caught somewhere between the two but today it was definitely closer to the latter than the former.

She brushed off those feelings though and laughed.

"Fujiko also wanted to mess with you a little. Sorry."

Shirogane doesn't appreciate that laugh, "So are you going to teach me or not?"

She stopped playing for a moment and turned to him thoughtfully.

Then she smiled and, putting on hand on his thigh for balance, leaned over to press a kiss to his cheek.

"Mm...maybe later?"

He tilts his head to catch her mouth with his briefly.

"If you're not going to teach me then I'm leaving."

The gesture surprised her (because just because a psychometer put their hand on you didn't mean they knew everything you wanted to do.

It was nice though and made her feel warm and happy and, on some level, she feels it is more than she deserves.

It was the rain doing strange things to her mood, she knows. Still, it was true that he had more to offer her than she did him. (She had next to nothing left to give, having lost so much already.)

She focuses on the good feelings though, smiling brightly, because she knows how precious and fleeting those can be.

"Fujiko is hungry."

And he was okay with that. He was okay with her not offering him anything because he would give her everything he had that he hadn't already devoted to his best friend and to his work. But anything left, he would give to her if she asked.

"Then the lesson is over."

She knows and that's exactly why she won't ask him to. He needs to leave a bit for himself and whoever comes after her when she inevitably leaves. (Though she wishes, more than anything, that that day will be very far from this moment.)

"So what are we having for breakfast?

Never let him hear her say that.

"...Omelettes."

"Sounds great! Fujiko wants goat cheese in hers!"

Because you're clearly making hers too, right?

He's not going to say he won't make it for her.

"Where is it?"

"It's in the fridge."

The really huge fridge in the kitchen.

Of course.

"Which part? That thing is way too big for two people."

"...I don't know." Because she's never gone into that thing, okay?

He sighs, but seems intent on trying to find it anyways.

"I'll go look."

"Yay!" Just for that she floats over to him to kiss him on the cheek.
