She ducks, putting her hands over her head as she heard glass shatter and bullets embedding themselves in the walls.

'...Honestly. This cat...'

Kuro would cackle if she weren't right there. Getting her out of there takes priority over cackling. He moved forward slowly and stopping only when she was within reach.

Once he was sure he'd caused enough chaos, he stopped shooting and grabbed her with his free hand to drag her towards...something. They needed to find cover.

Obviously, he didn't come in here with much of a plan.

She lets herself be dragged, too surprised really to do anything but gape at him.

"You...!"

[brbnapping]

He grins back at her. "Yeah it's me. Surprised?"

When he find a convenient place to take cover he pretty much...just throws her behind it. Because that's just how he rolls. He stays out and fires another round before ducking behind it as well.

Then he cackles.

"Heh. This is kind of fun." He doesn't ask if she's okay because he can see that she was. (Otherwise he would have been shooting to kill.)

She reflexively ducks and covers her head as he starts firing, "Y-You! I thought I told you to stay! I'm not your owner anymore!"

There's an unspoken 'what if you die, please don't die'.

[brbnapping]

"Yeah." He agrees easily and doesn't stop grinning even for a moment.

"That's why I don't have to listen to you anymore. Well, I'm a cat and we're pretty bad at following orders anyway."

He looks around their shelter for a moment. Oh, good. They have a moment. He pulls out the extra rounds of bullets he kept on a belt slung over his shoulder and begins to reload.

"Either way, I get to decide what I'm doing now that you're not my owner and I've decided I'm taking you away from here." A flick of his wrist and there's a click as everything slots back into place.

"We're leaving this place, we're going far, far away from this place, from the Duke, from Alice and from the Queen. We'll go wherever you want to go, and whatever happens I'll never let anything happen to you. I'll stake it on my pride as a tomcat."

He stands up, still short enough that he's coveredby what they've taken cover behind.

"If you're no longer the Duchess then I'm no longer the Cheshire Cat."

Her dress is trailing on the ground, she is on her hands and knees and covered in plaster and dust and who knows what else, but she's never felt as safe as she has with him here.

The Duchess presses her lips together, trying to stop the smile even as tears gather in her eyes.

"Honestly...you...if you're not the Cheshire Cat, then what will you be? You can't be without a name."

[brbnapping]

"Eh. I'll just be a cat, I guess." He shrugs carelessly, "But if you want, I'm sure you could come up with a better name than Cheshire Cat. I mean, what kind of name is that?"
