She shook her head.

"It's not your fault."

"No. I should have noticed. It's just that I wasn't really...really thinking about them, so..."

He was too occupied thinking about kissing her.

"Eagle," she brought a hand up to his shoulder, finally looking up, "It's not your fault." she repeats seriously.

"Yes, it is. I'm really sorry."

At times like these, Eagle kind of wishes that he were an ostrich instead.

"...Eagle."

She hated it when he got like this. She frowned.

"If you're to be blamed for now noticing them, then don't I also share the blame?"

"O-Of course not! I take all of the blame because I was distracted thinking about kissing, so none of it is your fault!"

Oh.

She opened her mouth. Then closed it again.

Oh.

The blush came back worse than ever and she couldn't do much besides stare for a moment.

"You...were thinking about--"

Eagle decides that even if he can't just stick his head into the sand, the least he can do is hide his face in his hands.

"I-I'M SORRY! I'M REALLY SORRY! I-I won't do it again!"

"No! I mean..." Wait, what did she mean?

Aqua looked away from Eagle and stared down at her feet. She found that...she didn't mind that he was thinking about...that. She looked at him out of the corner of her eye, before staring back down at her feet.

If only she looked more like some of the sea otters and actually had fur on her face. That would hide this blush, right.

"...it's fine." SHe cleared her throat, "Do you still want to...?"

"I-I-I....I don't...I mean...if you don't want to, then...!"

Was she saying what he thinks she's saying? Or has he finally lost it...

"W-well, if you don't want to it's fine too...but I wouldn't mind. Actually..." She's looking down at her paws and blushing. "I-I wouldn't mind."

Eagle looks down at the ground, "U-Um....well...if you don't mind, then..."

What an interesting patch of grass that is.

"I-I really don't mind." Still staring at her paws. Yup. Then she takes a peek at him.

"Um..." Then she looks away again because what do? "So..."

"S-So."

His hand goes to touch the patch of grass he was looking at as he tells himself that it's okay. He could totally do this. With a deep breath, he gently moves to take one of her paws in his hand, "Um. So. I...I'll just. Um."

Nothing in this world mattered right now, beyond this moment. With her. Although it was actually kind of difficult to kiss her while she was looking away....

His forehead is almost touching hers as he leans forward, "Aqua? Could you? I mean...if you're not looking at me, it's kind of..."

When he took one of her paws in his hand, her fingers curled over his hand. She could feel her heart hammering in her chest and it felt amazing and alittle terrifying all at once.

She took a deep breath and turned to look at him, making sure to not stare him in the eys by accident. More than anything, she wanted to make this moment perfect. Her faces was still red, but she looks certain...even if the grip on his hand tightens.

"I..." She purses her lips, "I'm ready."

"O-Okay."

He takes a deep, steadying breath and tries to ignore the mounting panic that's rising in his mind. What if he was really bad at this? What if she didn't like it? What if he missed and accidentally kissed a tree and then got engaged to it through some obscure ritual? (No doubt obscure because it was made up by Kangaroo.)

Screwing his eyes up tight and hoping that he's not making a weird face, he leans in and manages to press a kiss to the corner of her mouth. With his heart beating a mile a minute, he pulls away and looks down at their clasped hands, embarrassed and his mind chasing thoughts of hoping that he hadn't failed just because he missed a little bit, hoping that she liked it as he had, wondering if all kisses were this soft....and wondering if she'd let him kiss her again if he asked.

She might have held her breath for a moment right before their lips touched...well, sort of. The kiss wasn't entirely on the mark, but it still made her heart flutter.

When he pulls away, she brings the hand not holding his up to lightly touch the place he kissed. She had never spent a lot of time thinking about this kind of stuff so Aqua can't say if it was or wasn't what she expected (since she had no expectations) but it was...nice.

She blushed. It was more than nice, really because...well, because it was Eagle. Eagle who was always so earnest, who always held her hands so gently, whose smile always made her heart skip a beat.

Like him, she stared at their hands for a moment before looking up through her bangs.

"Um. That was..." She bit her bottom lip briefly, before looking away again, "...that was nice."

And with that one word from her, the world was bright again. Too bright to be real, almost.

He won't pinch himself to see though. What if it really was a dream? He didn't want to have to wake up.

"I'm glad."

"Could we...I mean." She took a breath and, even though she was still blushing turned to look at Eagle, "Could we do it again?"

Excuse him now while he stares kind of stupidly...because did she just say...

She said...

The staring and lack of response makes Aqua fidget and, after a moment, look away.

She peeks at him from the corner of her eyes.

"...is that a no?"

"NO!"

Wait.

"I mean, yes! Of course not! I mean, I don't...that is...i-if you want to! I-I want to. I really....I...uh...I........"

Eagle is only getting more flustered as he tries to explain because she's cute and her peeking at him from the corner of her eyes was cute and how could anyone be this cute.

She looks up, surprised at the 'no'. She relaxed though when he kept on going before she finally chuckled. She leaned over to press her forehead to his, bumping their noses together lightly.

"...I want to."

For a moment, he finds himself lost in those slightly lowered blue eyes and the even darker blue lashes. They were exactly like the sky and for a moment he can feel his heart swell with happiness. Happiness from the gentle bump of her nose against his, from the warmth of her hand, the fact that she wanted to kiss him and that this wasn't some elaborate joke, the fact that she had the same feelings as he did. Happiness from the fact that this wasn't a dream. This was reality.

He closes the distance between them with a soft peck, pulling back briefly with a contented sigh before he's tightening his grip on her fingers and leaning in again to press a lingering kiss against her lips.

For a sea otter, there was nothing more reassuring than a hand in hers.

It was a promise, that she won't be left alone when she opens her eyes, that there will always be someone there with her.

So she never even considers letting go even as they exchange kisses and it's...nice. Really, really nice. She made sure to not look Eagle directly in the eyes so she didn't accidentally ruin the moment, but she couldn't quite bring herself to close her eyes, either.

He looked so happy and it did ridiculous things to her heart to know that the happiness there was because of her.

After the second kiss she leans forward to rub noses with Eagle with a smile.
