That had pained him a lot to say, just so you know.

Oh, she knows. She knows.

Fujiko considered the door. Walking to the door would mean letting go and, despite the fact that she said they had all the time in the world, she wasn't quite ready to do that yet.

"All right."

She looked back at Shirogane, letting their noses brush as she asked, "Ready to go?" Even as she asked she was preparing to teleport.

It said a lot about how well he knew her now that he knew she was probably going to teleport. So he just smiles instead (treasure it, Fujiko, the likelihood of him smiling for you again is low) and leans closer, "Yes."

With a bright smile she closes what little distance remained between them and kissed him. She shut her eyes, but even as she did so she knew exactly where they were and what was around them.

Then it was only a matter of deciding on where they will go--

--then they were kissing on the train instead of the platform. A quick check told her no one else was here. Good.

Death just...looked at the spot they had been only a moment before. Albert was probably going to complain a lot about this afterward.

Shirogane though, doesn't know or really care what happens to Albert. The thought that he was supposed to be lecturing her for those 70 years hadn't occured to him yet. For now, he was content to just keep kissing her. They had all the time in the world now.

Fujiko would have liked to hear the complaints, actually. She always found Albert's little complaints amusing.

She couldn't have everything she wants, however. And, let's be honest here, she wanted this, what they had right now, more than she wanted anything else.

When she broke the kiss she smiled at him. "So? How was everyone? Did Minamoto and Kaoru finally get together? And Shiho and Ryuuko? How were they doing?"

"Everyone was doing fine. Shiho and Ryuuko were as they always are."

Which is to say: idiots.

"And Kaoru and Minamoto married. I went to that wedding."

Her eyes practically shone at that last bit of news. "Really? You mean Minamoto-kun finally confessed!?"

"I guess."

Honestly, he didn't really care. But he did attend it, because he owed Kaoru and Minamoto.

"Aaaaah. That's amazing! I didn't think he had it in him! Kaoru-chan probably made a beautiful bride!"

She wished she could have seen it. Though now that she's thought about it, she wonders what it would have been like to be a bride herself...

Which reminds her...

She pulls away with a bright smile.

"Speaking of marriages, Fujiko has something of yours~."

Something of his? He immediately goes for his pockets and searches for his wallet.

Why your wallet, Shirogane? It's not like she's has a habit of taking that! (She usually just steals his shirts.)

"Hehe." She watches him for a moment before hold her hand out, palm up. In the blink of an eye, there was a ring box sitting on her palm. "Of course, it should be Fujiko's, but that's not until you give it to me properly."

The box is free for him to take, by the way. She's not very well going to stop him.

He resents her habit of stealing his shirts. His shirts don't even fit her so he really doesn't understand why she even took them in the first place.

That ring box though...he takes it and opens it, not quite believing he was holding it. (Not only because it was guarded by rotating shifts of snipers.)

"How do you even have that?"

Inside was the ring he had bought for her, so many years ago. A ring that he had bought much too late at the time, a slim band of rose gold with a single diamond flanked by tiny seed pearls.

Some men found it sexy, you know. Fujiko did it mostly to annoy him though.

"It was in the lost and found at the station." She smiled, a little nostalgic when she remembered rifling through the Lost and Found one day (her intuition said to do it) and found a pretty ring there and putting it on. She remembered what she read from it and the way she had stormed up to Death and demanded to know (because otherwise she'd cry and that was unacceptable.

"He said it's because when you give someone something like that, it's theirs by right, but they most find it all the same. He said it was because it was a story."

Sorry, but most of that kind of went over his head.

"I don't understand what a story has to do with it."

He removes the ring from the box, looking at it as he remembered going into the jewellery store with a gaggle of way-too-young esper girls who cooed over everything while he stood stony-faced and ordered his ring from the woman working at the counter who wasn't sure what to make of the whole situation.

"....So do you want it or what?"

Of course he wouldn't. Shirogane was always so...practical and this was story logic. She will explain again if he asks, but she doubts it would really matter how many times she did it.

But that was fine.

This...not so much.

She eye him critically then pouted.

"Again."

He just gives her a blank look.

"What are you talking about?"

"That's not how you ask someone to marry you, Shirogane." She huffs and folds her arms.

"I can forgive the fact that you don't have flowers, or that you didn;t have time to plan anything elaborate, but usually people would at least get on one knee. Or put the ring on the girl's hand." She uncrosses her arms, planting one on her hip as she leans in to poke him in the chest with the other one. "You should at least ask properly. Geez."

Shirogane really wants to ask her where she was going to find the room for him to get down on one knee while they were on a train, but he suspected she would likely break something to make the room.

With a sigh, he takes hold of the hand that was poking him in the chest and leans forward, his nose brushing against hers, "Marry me."

"You're still not asking."

She points this out mildly, but she can't help the smile on her face, or the way her fingers curl around his hand.

"But: yes. Of course I'll marry you." Then she adds as affectionately, "You idiot."

He lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding, recovering with a matter-of-fact, "Good."

And then he takes out the ring and looks at it, glancing at her. Now what.

She couldn't help it, she laughed at his reaction. A quiet, breathless laugh because all of this was just...so like him.

The matter-of-fact way he recovered, the way he was so completely and utterly clueless about all this...it was as endearing as it always was.

She tilted her head and gave him a quick kiss before telling him, "You're supposed to put it on me now. You know which finger, right?"

"Yes."

He'd been lectured on it enough to know, okay. And he was there for more than one wedding.

Hopefully engagement rings and wedding rings went on the same finger, because that's where this one was going. He hesitates, then takes her left hand in his. Running his thumb gently over the back of her hand, he slips the ring on her fourth finger. It...still didn't seem quite real, to be honest. He knew that apparently, with this ring...she would be his. But what could a ring do about that, anyway? If she wanted to leave, it wouldn't stop her. If she died, it wouldn't save her. But...

He traces one delicate knuckle with his thumb, then leans forward so their foreheads are touching, "This time, it will be forever. Promise me."

The ring really was beautiful. She wasn't exactly surprised by that fact because she had been the one who told him exactly what she wanted and Fujiko has impeccable taste.

Still, there was something about the way it looked on her finger, about the way it looked when he was putting it on her that made her heart flutter.

She was probably smiling like an idiot, she knew, as she stared down at her hand but she can't bring herself to care.

Fujiko looked up though, at his question. Her smile softened.

Forever was something she was never able to promise him...no, not just him. Ever since the war, she hadn't been afraid of promising anyone that. Times were cruel then and she had experience enough broken promises that she couldn't trust herself to promise something like that. Then as the years passed it became a promise she couldn't possibly keep and the act of making it would be nothing but a lie.

Funny how it was here, after dying, when she finally felt safe to make this promise again.

"I promise." The words were quiet, but sure as she moved her hand to lace their fingers together. "This time, it will be forever."

After all, the usual vows were 'Till death do us part' and they're already past that and they were still here together. There was nothing else that could pull them apart now.

There was no pure white veil, no flowers, no priest and no altar, but he'd been to enough wedding ceremonies (annoying things) to know what came next.

He tucked a strand of pure white hair behind her ear, and laced his fingers with hers, feeling the coolness of the ring against his skin. In place of the priest and altar and the people they loved who made up their separate worlds, all he can give her is one of his rare smiles, one of pure happiness and contentment that makes his normally steely eyes the almost gentle shade of a winter sky. But this was enough. Forever was enough.

He leans forward to kiss her.
