When he hears the knock, Shirogane walks to the door, fighting the urge to linger and hesitate. That wouldn't change anything.

He opens the door, face impassive as it normally was. But as he looks down at her smiling face, he finds that he can't think of a single thing to say.

"Good morning, Shirogane-san." It's okay, at least for now, she still knew what to say. The next words are a little harder and she was worried that she might stumble over them. She tries not to though, because that was not the memory she wanted Shirogane to take home with him.

"Are you ready to go?"

He didn't think it was a very good morning, as far as mornings went and he isn't quite ready.

He looks back at the room he's spent a month in, taking in the view from the open window before he forces himself to say, "Yes."

A part of her almost wished he would say no. Anything to give them that much more time before they had to say goodbye.

Still, it wasn't like him to be that way. Shirogane-san is always punctual.

"Then we should get going."

"Mm."

Shirogane takes the suitcase from its place by the door (he had spent most of the night moving it around, unpacking and repacking) before he walks past her into the corridor of the hotel.

As they made their way down the stairs it really hit her that this will be the last time they'll walk these stairs together.

It made her chest tighten even though she did her best to not show it. She could do this...as long as she kept smiling.

"The waterways are a lot quieter this early in the morning."

He could promise her that he was coming back. But Shirogane didn't like making promises that he wouldn't be able to keep, not to anyone and especially not to her. All he can do is take in as much of the sights of the city she loves so much, and hope that she can move on.

"They are."

"The 'quiet' that is on Man-home is really different from this." There was always someone or something moving there. Even if, by chance there was no one the cities there had their own sound. It was different in quality than the kind of 'quiet' they got here.

She doesn't ask when he will come back. She didn't have the courage.

"I don't think I would be used to it if I ever went back."

Shirogane takes that to mean that she would never visit. And he wouldn't ask her to visit, because he knows if she promised, it would only cause problems for her.

At least, he knows that he could never make her put down her job as an Undine for something as trivial as visiting him on Man-home.

He doesn't look at her as he gives her a noncommittal, "Probably."

She hadn't meant it like that. (Though it was true she hadn't even thought of visiting Man-home for a long time.)

Akari didn't know what to say after that, so she focused on rowing and trying to commit everything to memory. The sounds, sights and smells of the moment.

Everything so that when their paths parted she would still have this memory. This beautiful, precious memory...

Because she doesn't say anything, he doesn't say anything either, just lets the wind run through his hair, blowing the bangs from his face, knowing that it would probably be the very last time he saw her.

Knowing that, and somehow...even though a part of him can't accept it, he forces himself to. He had responsibilities, just as she did. But he'd never forget her.

The gondola docks, and he looks away from the scenery to look at her.

Even though it felt like the trip stretched on forever, when their destination was in sight it felt like it had taken no time at all.

Their paths had crossed briefly, and now the moment When they would go their separate ways was right in front of her and she found she didn't want to let go.

When he turned around it would be to see Akari gripping her paddle so tightly that her knuckles were white. She was trembling (why couldn't she stop?) and she could feel tears gathering in her eyes (no, don't cry. Don't cry...).

She was smiling, though, because she wouldn't be able to do this if she didn't.

"I guess this is goodbye then."

For a moment, he wavers.

The sensible part of him says that they're on a gondola. He can't promise to stay. He can't even promise to come back. She would move on. She must be used to saying goodbye already.

But another part of him says that it hurts. It hurts to see her like this and he doesn't care that they're on a boat, or that they could fall into the water, and that he can't make promises he won't be able to keep.

He wavers, but then he takes her by the elbow and pulls her down and into his arms. He takes a shaky breath as he holds her tight, "I swear, I won't forget about you. I swear it to you. For as long as I live, I--"

To say Akari hadn't expected that to happen was an understatement. She let out a surprised yelp when he pulled her towards him.

She listened to his words, with her palms pressed against his chest. Slowly, her hands curled into fists and she clung to him like her life depended on it.

She couldn't stay strong until the very end, after all.

"...thank you. I won't forget you either, Shirogane-san."

His hand goes to the back of her head, as he memorizes this feeling. But it's almost no time at all, until he can hear the sound of the carrier-craft docking.

It's the signal that his trip to Aqua is at an end. He knows this. He knows he needs to let go.

But he clings to her anyways.

She doesn't point out that the carrier-craft had arrived. She was certain he knew already.

Instead she took a breath and pulled back a little, just enough so she can look him in the eyes and give him a watery smile.

"I was really glad I met you, Shirogane-san."

He stares in to her eyes and for a moment...just the briefest moment, the thought of staying here with her flashes across his mind. But he banishes it as quickly as it occurs to him, even though the thought (or was it a memory) of her hand warm in his lingers.

He had responsibilities. He had responsibilities.

If he repeated it enough times in his head, he hoped to convince himself.

'Calling all passengers, destination: Man-home.'

He frowns then, and looks abruptly away from her as he reaches for his bag.

Akari almost reaches out to hold him there...but she can't it wouldn't be right for her to do something like that.

There were things that mattered to him a lot back on Man-home, just like there were things that mattered to her on Aqua.

She couldn't be selfish. Whatever happens, she wanted to continue seeing him off with a smile.

"Make sure to take care of yourself."

He tightens his grip on his bag as he releases his hold on her, "Of course."

Why wasn't there some way to stay?

He starts to stand up, when he hears the familiar ping! that signals a new e-mail.

Akari had been around Shirogane enough that she's starting to associate that sound with him.

"Shirogane-san..."

The sound gave her an idea that she wasn't sure she could actually put into practice. As usual, though, Akari didn't consider that first.

The important thing was that there could be a way.

"Would it be all right for us to keep in touch?"

"Keep..."

The e-mail.

The tension in Shirogane's shoulders lessens, and if he had a mirror now, he would be able to see an expression on his face that he'd never thought he'd be able to make. Relief.

"E-mail. Do you have an address?"

"I do. Give me a moment..." Does she have a pen? Or a pencil? Or anything to write with...?

She patted her pockets but there was nothing...

It's fine because Shirogane is Always Prepared. He pulls out a pen from the front pocket of his bags as well as a pad of paper and quickly jots down his address.

Putting the pen away, he tears out the paper and folds it up neatly and precisely before handing it to her.

She took it with both hands. She stares at the neatly folded piece of paper in her hands for a moment before holding it against her chest as if it were something precious.

"...thank you."

And with such a simple thing, Shirogane feels more at ease. Whether it's because there is a way for him to keep in contact with her, or if it's because of the expression on her face at this moment, he feels like...somehow...everything will be okay.

"That's my work address."

Because what is a personal e-mail address. Who needs something dumb like that, gosh.

"But you can send me mail any time you want."
