That's definitely a relief! Natsuru gives Veronica a slightly amused smile at the mention of her books. She does have a lot of them. Natsuru can't imagine reading and researching that much, but it seems to be what Veronica enjoys.

It's also a convenient conversation starter. As she reaches for another dish to try, Natsuru asks, "So what did you read about today?"

The answer will probably go over her head, but she's trying to be supportive! She wants Veronica to be as happy as she can be, living here... and being together. Even if she can't always think of ways to express it without a few gentle nudges.

"Wow, this is good too...! You're really amazing, Veronica!" She doesn't even know if it's something Veronica made herself, but it's part of the dinner she prepared. So it still counts.

"Planting labyrinths."

It all started when she saw the title of a book and then it just went downhill from there. She was now on to researching on the heights of trees and pruning.

Veronica wasn't really going to plant a labyrinth, of course. She was merely curious as to how one would go about doing so, and she liked being thorough.

"Working every day and coming back and still being able to make time for me...I think it is you who are amazing, Natsuru."

"Ah... i-it's no big deal! The hours are pretty short, and... you're really important to me, so..." She's really making a habit of blushing and failing to complete thoughts. "If I could, I'd just stay here with you instead..."

Oh man, talking about this is so embarrassing! Even living together with someone, she's still kind of awkward about these things.

"Planting labyrinths...? Like, making mazes out of trees?" A beat passes, as she wonders if she understood that correctly. "... There's books about that?"

She doesn't have the same passion for research and reading that Veronica does, but hearing about some of the things that people have written about is kind of interesting, in a way!

"If you could, I'd like you to stay here with me all day as well."

It would be nice, having the company.

"There are. Not many, however. But labyrinths are not complex things, I do not think it will be long till I am finished with the material available. But it is not very important. You still have not told me about your day."

She leans forward in her seat, just a little. Food is forgotten for now as she gives Natsuru her full attention.

Hearing Veronica say that makes Natsuru blush even more, but she can't help but smile. Once she's more settled in at her job, she'll have to see when she can take some time off.

"O-oh... right..."

She clears her throat before continuing, partially as an excuse to delay and organize her thoughts. It still feels kind of awkward talking about working at a maid café.

"It was... mostly pretty quiet. We, uh... had one customer that tried to get a little handsy, but the manager dealt with him." She didn't want to make it sound like that was all that happened, but she had to take a second to think. "Oh! And I was requested for the VIP room today, so I got some pretty good tips!"

She had actually been worried about the VIP room when she was first hired, since the whole 'private service' thing sounded kind of sleazy. But the café actually has very strict rules protecting their maids, so it wasn't that bad at all. Being requested there more often just meant she's getting more popular among their regulars.

Veronica smiles, "I am glad. But remember not to overwork yourself and if there is ever anything, you must let me know."

She sits back, "No matter what, I will protect you."

Natsuru's breath catches in her throat at that. It was just... kind of unexpected. She'd always taken for granted that it's her job to do the protecting, not the other way around.

But that's how Veronica is. And honestly, it feels nice. Like they can be there for each other in every way.

"Y-yeah... me too. I'll protect you, I mean. No matter what..."

She's sitting back as well, fidgeting with her hands in her lap as she speaks. She hasn't touched any food for a while, focusing on the conversation, and Veronica, instead.

Noticing that Natsuru has stopped eating, Veronica tilts her head, "What is the matter? Is the food not to your liking?"

Oh, wait. What was it that the book said?

Veronica holds out a strawberry in her direction. "Here. Say 'ah'."

Natsuru visibly recoils in shock at the mere insinuation of such a thing. "N-no! Everything's great..."

Then, before she knows what's happening, Veronica holds out the strawberry. Natsuru completely freezes, eyes wide as she tries desperately to process this new information.

Fortunately for Veronica, her mouth is agape, too. She even lets out a small sound, gradually turning it into a tentative "A-ah...?"

Is this really happening?! And is she really going along with it...?

The 'ah', how ever tentative it is, is good enough for Veronica. Popping the strawberry into Natsuru's mouth, her smile brilliant before she goes back to finishing her meal as if what she did wasn't anything special.

"Mmm-?!"

Natsuru just motionlessly stares for a moment, barely seeming conscious of the strawberry even as she slowly chews and swallows. It just felt so... intimate, all of a sudden.

Her heart races while a blush spreads anew across her cheeks. "Ah... th-thank you. They're... delicious..."

That's all she can think to say. She wonders... was there some kind of signal she was missing? Should she do something else?

She picks up another strawberry, contemplating for a moment before she finally asks, "... Would you... like one, too?"

Oh god, what is she even doing?

Veronica blinks, a bit surprised. She honestly hadn't been expecting Natsuru to return the favor. Her expression softens though as she tilts her head,

"Yes. I would love to have one as well."

She leans forward slightly, as she had seen Natsuru do, opening her mouth slightly. "Ah."

Natsuru's not sure what she expected, but Veronica agreeing apparently isn't it. She feels a flutter in her stomach as she watches the other girl, but she's determined to follow through.

"Alright... h-here..."

It takes a second to calm her nerves, first. But then, she very cautiously holds out the strawberry and carefully repeats the gesture. All while having a really hard time not staring at Veronica's lips. She even licks her own lips, possibly in concentration. Possibly not.

Either way, once the strawberry has reached its destination, Natsuru leans back in her seat again, glancing down at the table and blushing even harder. She'd never expected Veronica to do something like that... and she can't decide how she feels about it.

She thinks she liked it, though. That feeling of closeness, and affection. That's why she wanted to return the gesture. She wants Veronica to feel the same way with her...

It hadn't even occurred to Veronica not to agree. As she lightly places her fingers on Natsuru's wrist to help guide the strawberry to her mouth, her eyes naturally settle on the other girl's face and she doesn't miss the way Natsuru licks her own lips. She isn't quite sure why though, but surmises that she may simply be hungry.

That blush though...that was worrying.

Veronica waits until she is finished chewing and swallowing, a hand covering her mouth, before she reaches out to brush her hand against Natsuru's cheek, "Are you alright?"

The brush of Veronica's hand against her cheek just makes Natsuru blush even more. But she does look up into Veronica's eyes again. She could swear her heart skipped a beat...

"Yeah, I'm fine..."

Her smile and tone are completely genuine, if a bit hesitant. She just doesn't know what to make of all of this. Veronica's making all of these amazing, affectionate gestures and Natsuru wants to do the same... but she doesn't know where to start.

Veronica wouldn't be able to tell her where to start. She isn't even doing any of this on purpose, seeing all of her actions as perfectly normal. She just happens to be an affectionate person, that's all. She liked the warmth of other people.

"If you are certain. If there is ever anything, you must let me know."

To make sure Natsuru knew how serious she was being, she gently leans forward so that her hand is cupped against Natsuru's cheek, "Promise me."

"O-of course! Promise..."

Veronica's hand gently cupping against Natsuru's cheek only makes it worse. In the sense that Natsuru doesn't know what to do, at least. That aside, it'd just feel really nice.

"You're, um... really good at this. All the... couple kind of things..."

Just saying the word 'couple' makes her blush. She's not even sure if she and Veronica really count as one, but it's the only way she can think of to describe it. All those little affectionate gestures that made her feel truly appreciated. She just wishes she could think of things that might make Veronica feel the same way.

It's Veronica's turn to be surprised, and the widening of her eyes and tilt of her head make her look much more her age.

"I am not trying to do "couple" things. I simply like touching you, that is all."

Any disappointment Natsuru might have started to feel at the possible denial is quickly swept away by the rest of Veronica's statement. It's a wonder she isn't stunned absolutely speechless.

"O-oh... um... so do I..."

Her voice comes out stilted and awkward, and it's only after the words are out that she realizes what she said.

"I-... I mean it's nice! I'd... kind of like to touch you, too."

It's an honest admission, and innocent enough in the context she's thinking of. But her expression goes from slightly stunned to abject horror as the many ways that could be taken suddenly hit. It starts to feel like time is standing still as she panics over how Veronica might react, but she's still not coming up with an explanation fast enough!

Veronica actually pauses at that statement, staring at Natsuru (possibly until she's uncomfortable).

She's thinking though, that's all. And the conclusion that she comes to makes her get up from her seat and walk to stand by Natsuru. Taking Natsuru's hands in her own she smiles down at her.

"Well?"

The stare certainly does make Natsuru uncomfortable, and she's convinced she said something very wrong. "Um, that is... I, uh... I meant..."

She freezes and immediately clams up once Veronica comes over and stands next to her. And she's even more surprised when she feels her hands taken in Veronica's.

She's staring up at the blonde the whole time in shock, but she's not recoiling away. In fact, her hands even relax into the touch, holding Veronica's gently. There might even be a faint touch of a smile developing. As her heart threatens to beat right out of her chest.

A questioning look creeps in after a moment, though. Holding hands is nice, but... is there more to this? Should Natsuru be doing something else now, or would that be too much? She's not panicking over it just yet, but she really doesn't know how to handle this sort of thing.

"Is, uh... is this... okay?"

Wasn't it supposed to be okay?

She honestly thought....that it was nice. Veronica very much liked the gentle feeling of those warm hands in hers.

So she's not really sure, so she gently brushes her thumb against the back of Natsuru's hand as she tilts her head, expression mildly confused as she looks down at the other girl.

"Yes?"

It takes a moment of confused staring, but Natsuru seems to come to the same conclusion. It really is nice, and she holds Veronica's hands just a bit more firmly as she looks up and smiles. Her touch is still gentle, maybe even a little hesitant, but she seems to have accepted that it's okay.

It's more than okay, really. It's perfect. If Veronica really doesn't mind, she'd want to do this all the time. All those little gestures, touches, signs of affection - she's always wanted to, but it can be so easy to worry that anything will be going too far and Veronica will hate her for it.

"... Does it always feel this nice?" A faint blush traces across her cheeks again, but she's so caught up in Veronica she's still smiling. "... Wh-when you touch me? I mean... it always feels nice for me, but..."

"I do not know if it is like this for others, but I do know that I like it."

Veronica gently shifts her grip, lacing their fingers together with a smile, "Like this....with our hands touching, it almost feels like we are linked together, does it not?"

Her eyes are soft as she leans forward to rest her forehead against Natsuru's, "Like this...it is so very warm and comforting. You are the one closest to me, and I am the one closest to you. I feel as if nothing could be more perfect than this moment."

Maybe it was because her homeland was a cold place, or the fact that for most of her life people kept their distance mindful of who she was, but one of the things she loved more than anything was warmth. Whether it was the warmth of sunshine, of a freshly drawn bath, of laughter and talking, of life itself...she loved all of it. So to someone like her, touching and wanting to be touched were as natural as breathing.

Natsuru's speechless the whole time, but the warmth in her eyes signals her agreement. She never really thought about it that way, but... she likes the way Veronica describes it. Warm and comforting... she felt that way about Veronica's presence in general, not just when they touch. But the touch adds even more.

Closing her eyes, she gives a contented little sigh. She just wants to stay like this for a moment.

What happens next could be a total accident or Natsuru going along with the moment. Even she isn't sure. But she shifts position slightly, and ends up brushing her lips against Veronica's, before she slowly pulls away.

Maybe it was a little more than a brush. It could just barely be counted as a kiss. She hadn't meant to do it, it just... happened. She thinks.
