She'd left him a note in his locker. All it said was, "Come meet me on the roof after school" in Hiroki's usual neat script.

Hiroki stood there, her hands on the railing as she looked out with a grim expression.

Shirogane hadn't exactly hurried there. Honestly, he didn't really want to go at all. Not with the recent happenings at the school, not with Ryuuko injured, and with the feeling that everyone around him could potentially be an enemy.

But he knew he owed her that much, at least, didn't he? Even with this whole mess that the world had suddenly become, he owed her that much.

Taking a deep breath, and trying to feel calm (the prince in him sighed), he pulls open the door to see her standing there.

"What?"

She took a deep breath while her back was still to him.

A part of her had hoped he wouldn't show up. Hiroki knew he would but it would have been so much easier if he didn't.

When she turned around she had fixed a smile on her face.

"I wanted to ask what you thought about all this." There should be no need to clarify what 'this' is.

Shirogane really disliked that smile, so unlike her normal one, and his frown deepens. Was she lying to him too?

He didn't want to think that she was.

"It's stupid."

On some level, she realizes she might hurt him. But she needed to find out what she can about the past in order to put her (Bart's) regrets to rest.

"Because you don't remember anything?" She knew he was a terrible liar. If she could just lead him to give an answer, any answer, she will know if it's true or not.

Then she can figure out where to go from there.

He was a terrible, terrible liar. The way he looks to one side, unable to meet her eyes is a testament to this. His voice sounds too defensive, even to his own ears, "No. Because the rest of them are all idiots."

She had already been fairly sure about it, but she was now 100% certain that he was lying about not remembering.

She's not sure things wouldn't have been better if he didn't.

"That's not a nice thing to say about your classmates, Shirogane."

"Well. They are."

And for a moment there, Shirogane is very much the boy once again. Not the king who was always lofty, always right. Always certain that he was right.

That gave her pause.

Right at this moment, she wanted nothing more than to just walk up to him and hold onto him and not let go. Because even though he had always been an idiot he always made her feel safe.

She would have liked feeling that way right now.

But there were more important things to consider.

She crossed her arms and said lightly, "Not as much of an idiot as the person who thinks he can lie to his girlfriend."

There, her cards (at least the ones she was willing to show right now) were on the table.

"I'm......"

Shirogane can't manage to say that he isn't lying because despite wanting to protect himself and not trust anyone, he was torn. Torn between being this incarnation, and being the king. The king was all for leaving. The boy fidgeted. She was his girlfriend. All those times with her, the sad times, the times when she made him angry, happy...they were all precious memories.

He tries again.

"I'm...I....I don't know if I can trust you."

She should smile it off. Smile and try her best to convince him to reveal everything before she decided to reveal everything on her end. She thinks she could have, because of the person he was, because of the person she was.

Hiroki couldn't muster up the energy though, to play this game, not when she could feel anger bubbling just under the surface. When with just that once sentence she had made it feel like her heart had been broken.

"Why? Because I might have been your enemy?"

He looks up when he hears that, eyes wide and every inch the boy that he was. The very thought of her being an enemy...

"No. Even if..."

He looks at her pleadingly, "I...If you ended up being an enemy then..."

He turns away, "Then who do I have left to trust?"

Hiroki's expression was unreadable, as her mind turned, taking in every little detail in his body language and expression.

If they were enemies, what would she do? If he turned out to be an enemy of Zerestria, then...

She had already considered to implications before she called him up here. She knew it was possible that he was not only Moswickian but also responsible in some way for what happened.

That's why she needed to know for sure. She can't go looking for answers if she can't even bring herself to confirm this. She can't find the truth with such half-hearted convictions.

And it had paid off, hadn't it? She still didn't know who he was yet, but she had been able to confirm one thing: whatever their relationship was in the past, they didn't have to be enemies this time around. She wasn't like Nanaura who would attack Moto just because his past life was from Moswick.

To Hiroki, she is both Hiroki Yu as well as Bart Belbania, and the relationships she had in this time were real.

She breathed out, exasperated, "...honestly." she walked towards him, with even, unfaltering steps, her expression set. "I won't say you're wrong to worry. Everything's been really strange, after all." When she was close enough she poked him in the chest. "But it doesn't mean you aren't an idiot."

He takes her hand in his, frowning reflexively, "Don't call me an idiot."

"I'll call you an idiot when you're being one."

She brings her second hand up and holds his between hers. "I'm only going to say this once: whether you are Zerestrian or Moswickian, doesn't matter to me. My only enemy are those who were responsible for the attack on the castle." She looked him right in the face, letting none of the nervousness she was feeling show,

"So, Shirogane, are you my enemy?" She's not going to just believe his answer, but she could tell when he was lying and, so far, it seems like she still could. So what mattered wasn't just what he said but how he said it.

"I..."

He swallowed thickly. He felt sick. If he put his trust in her...would she betray him? Would it be his fault again?

His hand comes up to brush against her face, as his heart feels like it's going to stop from how fast it's beating.

"I...I'm not."

She didn't lean into the touch though she wanted to. Instead, she let out a breath and pulled the hand in her hand close.

"...I'm glad." She looked down, the honest I wouldn't know what to do if you were never making it past her lips. She was smiling again when she looked up, though she might be holding onto him too tightly still. "So who were you before?"

"That's..."

He tightened his grip on her hand in return, looking away but wanting to plead with her to trust him.

It wasn't even that she didn't trust him (because she did). But she couldn't be too careful.

She didn't look away even when he did and she asked simply, "Would it be easier if I told you first?"

He really wants to say yes, but at the same time he knows for a fact that some part of him would think she was lying. He swallows, and before she can ask him again, he looks up at the clouds wondering why this couldn't all just be simple.

"I'm the prince."

"...eh?"

Whatever Hiroki had been scheming went right out the window at his answer. Because this was...he was...what?

"...the prince?" Her eyes widenened for a moment before she blurted out without thinking, "That's...you!" She took a step back, more out of shock than anything and pointed at him. "To claim something like that...where is your proof!?"

He looks at her finger than back at her, "There is no proof. You can take it or leave it."

"You--" And then she falters, because that is...very much something her prince would say, wasn't it?

She breathed in before letting her hand drop.

"When the squires of Zerestrai first arrived at the castle, Bart Belbania hadn't been wearing his jacket. What was the reason?" It was Glen who hadn't worn the jacket but that, as well as the reason should be known to this man if he really was the prince.

"That didn't happen. He's not that kind of person."

And because this was a tiring day, he narrows a glare at the sky. She was testing him because she doesn't trust him.

She had to have known that he'd see the problem with her question. She didn't trust him and it hurt.

At the answer, she lets out a breath she didn't realize she was holding in.

There were a million other things she could ask. Bart had spent a lot of time with the prince after all.

But because of that...because Bart knew the prince and Hiroki knew Shirogane there was no actual need to ask any more.

She swallowed.

"...your highness...Shirogane...I--" And there was nothing to say except sorry. Except sorry didn't feel quite good enough. She dropped to her knees and bowed her head.

"Forgive me for my insolence."
