He thought she was probably multi-tasking on her end. He had switched off everything else, but that was because he was single-minded in everything and he didn't want distractions.

That was why, her statement seems like it came completely out of the blue.

"What?"

[distantblue]

She folded her hands in her lap and smiled. It was quiet, and thoughtful as well as a little sad.

"I want to see you."

Not through a screen, but to actually see him. Face-to-face.

"Even if this should be enough, an insistent part of me still wants to see you."

He wants to tell her that they're seeing each other now. He really does.

But that quiet, thoughtful smile makes it difficult. That wasn't the kind of smile he was used to seeing on her face and it hurt to see it.

"...I'm sorry. I kind of ruined the mood, didn't I?"

Shirogane's head snaps back to the screen and even though he knows it's useless, he can't help but to reach out as well, his fingers curling around the screen,

"No!"

He takes a deep breath, his eyes sliding away once more, "No. You didn't. I...."

"...I didn't think that you ruined it."

His reaction surprised her a little and since Akari's always worn her heart on her sleeve, it's plain to see.

"Oh." Then the surprised expression melts away and she smiles. "...I'm glad."

The time they had to speak with each other was precious, after all.

How he missed her smile...

"...good. It...really is getting late, isn't it?"

He's not implying that he wants her to leave, just that he worries over her.

She stops and looks over at the clock.

"...I guess it is." She laughs sheepishly, "I didn't even notice how late it had gotten!"

There's a lot of silence from his end. He doesn't want her to leave, but after a while, he simply says,

"Don't go to sleep too late."

[distantblue]

"You too." She hums a little, "Same time tomorrow?"

It's hard to say goodbye, but it's easier, knowing that she can still talk to him like this tomorrow and the next day and the next.

If Kou knew about this (and Shirogane actually cared about what the stupid dog thought), he'd never hear the end of it. As it was though, all that mattered was the same promise they made after every single call since he'd left.
