There's a beat after he presses his nose to her forehead, her eyes wide before she laughs, delighted and so content that it seemed like a dream. (But she knew it wasn't. Dreams didn't smell of sunshine and dust.)

"Do not turn away, Lion."

Gently, she puts her hands on either side of his face and turns him back to her. She presses her nose against his forehead again, lingering and carding her fingers through his hair with each bump of her nose. She wanted him to know how much she appreciated him, how thankful she was for him, for them.

That and she also kind of wanted to tease him as well.

"And why ever not? It is simply a combination of a flavour and a dish. That is what cooking is at its very essence."

Says the princess who cooks terribly.

Veronica listens very carefully to this language that she couldn't yet completely understand, turning the sounds over in her mind before smiling at Changge,

"Dinner first, after all."

Their table is a tiny one in the corner, pressed to a wall, with a tiny copper lantern sitting on it. Veronica smiles at the little spots of light it casts over the sauce pots before taking her seat and waiting for Changge to take hers.

"What was the waiter saying earlier? Can you repeat it for me?"

She recognized 'yes' and 'thank you' from Changge but that had pretty much been it.

Of course it went over just fine. Oichi enjoyed the feeling of being loved, being cared for. It was a thing she would not have thought she deserved if she were still lucid enough to think about it, but none of that could hurt her any longer and she simply let herself breathe in the scent of Eve's hair, of her clothing, the warmth of Eve's hand on her head.

With a content sigh, she leans into her touch. Even if Train was here, she wouldn't have cared.

And then moment he hears the knock, he's heading for it immediately, the only indication that he was flustered at all was the fact that he didn't even bother to finish what he was doing first.

Looking down at her, he searches her face for an answer, even as he's opening his mouth to ask,

"Well?"

He's not saying anything and she can't make him.

"It's really nothing. I'm really sorry."

"Mm."

She nods, inadvertently looking up as she leans into the feeling of his fingers through her hair, the soft sound of the wooden comb.

It is a strangely intimate feeling, a familiar feeling. She can't help but to think that maybe there was another time when someone else combed her hair for her before bed. Who was it?

She couldn't remember so she lets the memory slide away, lets her mind empty of everything but the smell of the night air, of Kyousuke, of this moment.

If Kou knew about this (and Shirogane actually cared about what the stupid dog thought), he'd never hear the end of it. As it was though, all that mattered was the same promise they made after every single call since he'd left.

"Same time tomorrow."

Her hair is like the finest silk. That is what he thinks as he works the comb through her hair.

"Don't the servants normally brush your hair, Oichi-dono?"

'I don't think so' is close enough to 'no' in her books.

"Then let's go on a date!"

"I said forget about it." And he puts his arm around Eagle.

"How about a slasher flick?"

She's asking it just to see his reaction, really. She'd never make him sit through a slasher flick.

He was stronger than her. If he wanted to, she wouldn't be able to turn his head so easily.

But when she does it, he allows it without a fight.

"...tch."

But even so he can't help the smile that pulls at the edges of his mouth.

"But there are some combinations that just do not go well together."

She pauses to think.

"I believe there are some spicy appetizers that are chilled."

"Dinner first." She agrees with an easy smile as she takes her own seat across from Veronica.

"He asked us if we wanted a table for two." Then she repeats it again, in the language of the Han for Veronica.

"How would you have asked that in your language?"

She smiles, wide and bright as she reaches out to take one of his hand between both of hers.

There's a pleased flush on her cheeks and her voice is breathless with wonder and excitement and pride when she answers.

"She passed."

"If you're sorry then tell me."

He was smiling. Zebra coming in and announcing that he was going to give everyone rides wouldn't have stopped her from how determined she was to bump her nose against Lion's forehead. Heck, even Kangaroo busting in and announcing that he was going to give everyone rides wouldn't have stopped her.

But his smile stops her and she feels her heart soar, much the same way it always does when she leaves the cage or when she sees the sky. She pulls back to rest her forehead against his, the tips of her fingers coming up to brush against the edges of his mouth, tracing his smile.

Veronica looks very surprised, "There are?"

She'd always assumed that if you could put it in one pot that it would go together.

"Are they also foods from your home country, Changge?"

And Veronica repeats it right back at her, having difficulties with not ending her vowels with a consonant but managing a fairly passible version of what Changge had said in the language of the Han before saying the phrase in Zerestrian.

Zerestrian is a very lilting, melodic-sounding language, made worse by the fact that Veronica tends to be very expressive in her speech too. She's never had any experience with someone who would say "a table for two?" so she has to make some modifications and ends up with something that is literally "a table that seats two people" and a rising tone.

"Although that may not be exactly correct. I've never really been to a restaurant back home before."

"D-D-Date?!"

He was pretty sure that was what she had said, but then again he was open to the possibility that he was off dreaming weird things again.

He has nothing to say in reply to that, so Eagle's hands come up to carefully grip against the back of Lion's shirt. He had to admit though, the warmth of Lion's body against his was actually...really nice. They'd never really slept together back home (because wow, no one would ever let either of them live that down) but now he wonders why.

"This...feels really good."

And despite himself, his own heartbeat was slowing, calming because Lion was a reminder of home and if he'd ever let himself admit to it...Lion was actually the one who reminded him of home even more than Snowy Owl or Kangaroo. He was his responsibility, after all.

And his reaction is to immediately look up at her, green eyes wide. He...never knew she liked that kind of thing but...if she wanted to...

"Um...if you wanted to, that's fine. Uh...do you know any good ones that are playing right now?"

HE CAN'T.

"I-uh, um...."

Eagle hangs his head, resisting the urge to twist his shirt in his hands before he turns away abruptly and looks down at the ground, "...really pretty."

They did, usually.

"Fujiko told Ichi to ask Kyousuke to do it for me."

Maybe it was for the best that she doesn't think to tell him that Fujiko had also tugged down the neckline of her kimono as well in order to show as much of her nape as possible.
