He can't say no. He really can't.

Fidgeting terribly, Eagle stands rooted to one spot as she takes (!!) his hand.

Shirogane's head snaps back to the screen and even though he knows it's useless, he can't help but to reach out as well, his fingers curling around the screen,

"No!"

He takes a deep breath, his eyes sliding away once more, "No. You didn't. I...."

"...I didn't think that you ruined it."

She smiles at her phone too. Then she turns the screen away from hers and fires off a quick text to Eagle.

Do you want to go see a movie sometime?

"Well, I suppose we can eat spicy food, then. It does make sense. Perhaps we could turn on the air-conditioning while eating it."

She laughs, giving Changge's fingers a gentle squeeze, "Do you not think that would make it twice as effective?"

He walks over and opens the shoji. He steps out first and leaves the door open for Oichi. Then he sits down on the floor facing the gardens, letting his feet dangle over the edge.

He turns back and smiles at her while patting the space beside him.

"You can sit here, Oichi-dono."

She doesn't let go of his hand. Instead she brings the other one up to brush his forehead lightly.

"It looks like it didn't break skin...and I don't think it's going to bruise."

What a relief.

"I think we might just both end up catching a cold if we did that, Veronica."

Her expression is a little exasperated but still very fond and she squeezes Veronica's fingers back.

His reaction surprised her a little and since Akari's always worn her heart on her sleeve, it's plain to see.

"Oh." Then the surprised expression melts away and she smiles. "...I'm glad."

The time they had to speak with each other was precious, after all.

If there is a prize to be won, we've both probably won it by now.

Her desk is only partly cleaned up right now. Most of the scraps of wire have been swept into a pile and she was just putting a pair of pliers back when she hears the sound of the door opening. She leaves the pliers on top of the box and takes the boxh she'd wrapped up.

"I'm upstairs!" She calls back when she hears her name. Then she's moving back to where she hears Natsuru, slipping the box into the pocket of her sweater as she did.

"Welcome home." She says with a smile when she sees Natsuru. "Do you need any help with that?"

How he missed her smile...

"...good. It...really is getting late, isn't it?"

He's not implying that he wants her to leave, just that he worries over her.

Eve's heart skipped a beat.

Oichi's eyelashes were so long and pretty. Eve's thumb brushed over Oichi's cheek.

"Did you sleep well?"

Eagle jumps and then when he gets the chance to read the text, he turns a bright red, looking from her back to his phone and back to her again. Was this actually happening?!

"Y-Yes!"

Eve's touch always made her feel safe, and loved. And because she felt safe and loved, she inevitably felt sleepy as well.

"...Yes."

Don't mind her, she's just going to be dozing off against Eve's shoulder again.

Oichi obediently follows him out of the room, settling herself down on the space indicated, letting her feet dangle just like he does.

What she forgets to do though, is to hand him the comb as her eyes drift over the dark garden, at the faint light of fireflies near where the ornamental pond was.

She scoots a little closer to him, and hand coming up to hang onto his clothes.

"Perhaps we could just turn on a fan, then? They are not as cold."

Sorry, but this idea's already taken root in her head. Veronica kind of likes the cool air that hits her skin when they enter the grocery store, and as she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, she turns to smile at Changge.

"What shall it be? Spicy food? Salad?"

This is already much closer than his brain can handle and wow, she was really pretty.

Wait.

Eagle shakes the thought from his head of her long eyelashes and her pretty eyes and just like someone who is determined not to think of a pink rhinoceros, ends up thinking of nothing but her.

He doesn't blush at her smile. Not at all. (Spoiler: he did.)

He lets her pull him towards the couch and he knows what it's for because he'd seen something similar at Eagle's place, but...

"Can we both fit on that?"

If he blushed, she didn't notice. She was more occupied with fluffing up pillows and trying to clear enough space for the two of them.

"I am sure it will be fine. I can roll from one end to the other, so there must be enough space. Come, Lion."

She sits down and then gives the spot beside her an expectant pat.

And even though Lion is, well, a lion and not a dog, he goes over and sits where she indicated.

"Tch. If you fall off it's not my fault." Except he's already curling and arm around your waist. He won't let you fall.

Changge had found this place entirely by accident. It was nestled away from all of the glaring lights in the area, a small place with familiar spices and smells amidst all of Death City's foreignness.

She tries the food on her own first, finds it at once familiar and different. Either way, it was good.

So next time, she drags Veronica with her when she goes.

"Their desserts are almost just like the kind I can get back in Chang An."

He wouldn't let her fall. With a smile, she leans up a little and pulls his head down so that she can nudge her nose against his forehead.

"And even if I did, I have absolute faith that you would catch me."

She knew the significance now although she hadn't when Kangaroo had told her to do it to Lion. Whenever. Wherever. Now though she just did it because she liked the way Lion reacted when she did.

She hums a little three note tune as she pulls away from him, obviously very pleased with herself.

Veronica walks beside Changge, through the city she always found endlessly fascinating. Bright and vibrant, full of life. She wondered if this was what it was like in the capital as well? Not in the castle, but in the towns and the villages surrounding it.

As she ponders this, they near the restaurant with a name she couldn't read and the air is full of warm, savory, unfamiliar smells.

She brightens up at the mention of desserts though, "What kind are they?"

She would pout if she knew what he was thinking. She would never try to hurt you, silly Eagle.

"Good." Then she pulls away enough to grab his hand, "Are you busy?"

The correct answer is 'no' by the way.

"Yeah, well." He keeps his face turned away from Eagle and it might look like he's sulking, but the truth is he's hiding a blush.

"Forget about it. It doesn't matter."
